You don't need Photoshop at all to use it...well unless you want to open a PSD document. PSD is not a file option format option. With the Photoshop plug in version, you can target a specific layer and apply a filter. This is one thing the stand alone version doesn't do although you can open Tiff and png files and have transparency respected. I should caution I have the Pro version so don't know if all the file formats that I have exist in the other versions offered. File formats: See image attachment below...
The user interface is exactly the same in plug in and standalone. Stand alone has more options like open image which are grayed out when in plug in mode as you can only work the currently open document. A lot of users prefer the standalone mode anyway. Standalone can in some cases be faster than working in plug in mode.
When it's all said and done the only thing you are missing out on in Stand alone vs plug in version, is the ability to target a specific layer in a multilayer document.
If you have Corel Painter, FF installs just as it does in Photoshop. I have Painter ix and it installed the plug in versions for both products at installation.
Two threads about Corel products and FF installation....specifically Paintshop Pro which should also work with it.

Well, have to admit that I bought it. Hopefully I can get my monies worth out of it.

...thank you, that is very helpful. I have PSP X4
For those on the fence... I don't have very much to spend on CGI related goodies, BUT Filter Forge has been one of my favorite purchases ever... I use it now to create most of my textures or to enhance photos of materials I intend to use as textures.
For me Pro was the best option, but when I first purchased it (FF2) I got the Standard version (you are limited to 3000x3000 ppi images and you can't use the bump map and normal generator), but I quickly upgraded to pro when there was a sale.
I don't know if anyone mentioned it, one cool thing about FF is with standard and pro you can make your own filters... if you upload them to Filter Forge's library and they receive a lot of usage, you can win points for free upgrades and if they are popular enough, you can receive free lifetime upgrades to future versions. It is not easy, but people with popular filters but people do earn them (two artists who I see post here- RawArt and Totte both have received reward points).
I highly recommend Filter Forge, not only for texture creation, but for photo enhancement too... it's even "fun" to play with filter creation... I have even shared a couple of granite textures I came up with.
One last thing... 70% is a great deal, if you are gonna get FF do it while it's 70% off and when version 4 comes out, wait for a 50-60% off sale... (they occur every couple of months) and upgrade a level if you've chosen one lower.
I was actually just now waiting for a texture to render out when I came here!
My screen shot example above was done using PSP X4 as well. I mostly use Filter Forge as a plug in for PSP. When you install it asks what programs to associate with the filter and then Filter Forge shows up in the plug in list. Super easy.
I bought the Basic version, as I don´t have money for a higher version. It did cost me about 53 USD anyway, not just 44 USD, because Filter Forge is apparently one of those websites that add European VAT to the price of their products... Maybe sometime in the future I will be able to upgrade to Standard version, in the meantime I hope to have lots of fun with Basic and all the filters available.
