3delight reflection bug?

it looks like using reflection, subD and Instances throws the renderer off-

- Create a plane, and turn up the reflection to 100%

- Insert a primitive on top of it and render. The primitive should have a reflection.

- Now convert the primitive to SubD (Edit > Object > Geometry > convert to SubD) and render again. The reflection is still there.

-Now create an instance of that primitive and it no longer reflects..

-Hide the instance and the reflection returns.

Not only does it not reflect onto the floor, if you apply a reflective surface onto the primitive, it wont work either.

I've tried it on 4.10.0.123 64bit running on windows 10

and on 4.10.0.107 32 bit running on windows 7.

Go into your Render Settings pane and click on Sampling. What's your Max Ray Trace Depth value? This sets how many times a light ray bounces off stuff on the way from light to camera before it stops. Note that this also includes light rays passing through transparent objects, although I'm not sure if materials with Sub Surface Scattering also count towards this.

There's a bug where the shadows of instances stop working if the root object has any subd. Maybe it's related.

Yes I tried it and you're right. I did know about the shadow bug but this was new to me. I think Oso is right, they are related. Hmm should make a bug report, not that it changes anything but...indecision

Thanks for the input everyone and confirming this on your systems. I've submitted a bug report

Has this been the case for a long time already or is it a reletively new bug?

my Max Ray trace depth was 4. It rendered the reflections perfectly until I created the SubD

Bradrg: Longtime bug. I think I first heard it was reported 2 years ago.

So, on the one hand, that makes it unlikely to be fixed any time soon. On the other hand, maybe your observation might help it get resolved finally. We'll see!

    Hi,

I have a similar bug detected several years ago: One of several aspects of refraction for both: 3Delight and iray.
But: "Sorry - it's not DAZ" --> Report closed.
