Move older version of Daz onto new computer?

Hello,

I have an old computer running XP that I disconnected from the internet when support for XP stopped. On it I have Daz 3.0.1, which I am still using. I got a new computer with windows 8, downloaded the current version of DAZ which at that time was 4.9, bought a whole bunch of characters, lights, props, etc. to use with it. I spent several hours trying the new Daz and pulling my hair out and decided to keep using 3.0.1 on the old computer. I am dreading the day my old computer gives out and I will lose my beloved 3.0.1. I am not a computer guy, but is it possible to create a new partition or volume on the new computer and move the contents of the old hard drive, including 3.0.1 onto the new computer?

Daz studio 3 should install under Windows 8. However, DS 3 won't use the newer content (the Genesis figures, or files in .duf format).

  • Yes, I didn't plan on being able to use any new content on DS3 but I'm OK with that.

When you say install do you mean transfer all daz program files to the new computer? I thought it would have to be downloaded from this site, from which I could only get the current version. I would need to uninstall DS 4 first?

"do you mean transfer all daz program files"

No. That will not work with Windows (not since Windows 3.1, at least). When programs are installed they make changes to numerous system files, including the registry, and so copying your DAZ Studio 3.x files over to the new PC will not work. What Richard was saying is that you could do a fresh install of Windows 3.x, assuming that you have the installer for that. If you do not have the installer, and it is not in your Product Library in your account here at the DAZ site, I'm afraid you're hooped. If you had "purchased" DAZ Studio 3.x through the DAZ site, it should show up in your Product Library (even if you purchased it for free).

  • No I didn't "purchase" Daz from this site, but I did download the free version from here. I had to set up another account because my original email was lost. So guess I'm hooped.

    Thanks for your help.

You could try copying the application folder over and see if it runs - DS 2 worked like that, it depends on whether there are changes that need to be made by the instalaltion process or whether DS can rebuild any missing registry keys on launch. It's always wise to keep the installers though.

  • I did something like that years and years ago, must have been Daz 1 or 2. I wanted to use it at work (you know, on breaks and stuff) but didn't want to load it on my work computer so I put it on a thumb drive. There were a couple of .dll files I had to install on the work computer but otherwise it worked. Abandoned this scheme pretty quickly though because it just wasn't a good idea. Thought I had read newer versions of Daz could not work this way. I'll play around with it.
