Renders and my new baldspot

When I do a render it basically shuts me down even though I have my photoreal and interactive devices set to my video card ( a GTX 660), my system is older but not ancient. This worked really well for 2 renders as it barely loaded my cpu. Now it is pushing my cpu to 90-100 percent even though I have changed nothing? Is the card too old, am I missing something a chipmunk would know?
I increased my ram to 16 gig but the software is still clunky and I don't move very fast as I spend much of my time rubbing my head. Any advice would be appreciated at this point.

If it's using nearly 100% of CPU that sounds as if the video card has run out of memory - Help>Troubleshooting>View Log File and scroll to the end after rendering, you will see a note of how much work each device (CPU and GPU) did. If that is the issue then you may need to use smaller texture files (Scene Optimiser in the store will help with that, as will a couple of free scripts in the forum). That is, of course, assuming that the render is actually using Iray andf not 3Delight.
Always nice to rent a better brain. Exactly right on your call, video card is just running out of memory. I think Scene Optimiser would fit me just right, Thank you.
Yeah, atacit, if you have the standard GTX 660, it only has 2 GB of memory, so you are limited significantly in what you can render with it. I have a GTX 660ti variant that has 3 GB of memory and need to keep the scenes pretty simple to prevent buffer overflow and defaulting to the CPU. Otherwise, the card works pretty well for its age.
