Two questions re: mesh lights and g3m eyes

Question 1: can mesh lights be used in 3dl renders? I have mesh lights for iray that are great. I am wondering whether there is a way to make them work, perhaps like an area light, in 3dl renders. I cannot recall if the omnifreaker area light gives you an option for adding that lighting ability to other meshes.

Question 2: the eyes in g3m drive me nuts in 3dl. IN iray they always have reflections, but the only way I can get anything close to highlight reflections is if I use the m4 textures that I have. Perhaps Darius 7 eyes give a touch of light. I ahve tried adjusting the specular glossiness on the eye moisture or eye surface, but often that has 0 opacity and if you up it, it ends up blocking the whole eye. I am just at a loss here. I had so many great eye options with the generation 4 series and it seems like M6 and m8 sort of work (though even M8 has issues).

So I am really wondering if there are any tips, tricks, products folks have for getting reflections/highlights on genesis 3 eyes.

The uberArea surface shader, included with DS, gives emissive surfaces. You can also use Ambient Colour on a standard 3Delight shader and uberEnvironment in the bounce light mode.

Check that the Mulitply Specularity Through Opacity option is off if you want highlights on transparent surfaces.

But I am not sure that they ARE transparent surface. Any texture that i have bought that has a 3dl version seems to reflect NO light on the eyes. if i set sclera, iris, pupil etc to reflect then I get multiple odd reflections. But in iray and older versions of textures for 3dl you could set the gloss on the eye surface without an opacity map and get a dot of light showing. Here I cannot figure out how to do that.

If you can see the iris and not the cornea, the cornea is transparent.

but I think that often the cornea has the opacity set to 0. I can try to manage specular and reflecting on cornea and make sure the mulitply is not set on the cornea. But this is my question. With gen4 (M4 and V4) there was an eye surface and if you set the specular glossiness you could adjust how big the light dot reflecting on the eye was. I am not seeing the same option with later figures.

I don't get what the problem is:) Newer figures use exactly the same shaders as older( in 3DL). Set specular and reflection strength to 0 for everything except the cornea. Set lighting model for the cornea to glossy plastic. Set cornea diffuse strength to 0%. Turn off mulitiply specularity through opacity. Set opacity to 20. Set glossiness to about 90%. Set reflection strength to 100%. Reflection color to pure white. Set refraction strength to 100%. Set IOR to about 1.6. Done! If you want more raytraced reflections you need to convert cornea to UberSurface and set multiply reflections through opacity to off.

I will try this. But honestly, these are not the settings that I see, and the newer products seem to use different 3dl shares. I would happily use basic daz shaders--is that what you mean?

OK, unless I convert the surfaces to the daz default shaders, there is no way to select glossy plastic. I have done that and tried several options but I get no change

Yes that's what I mean, the Dz default shader.

Hmm, so you're saying you converted to dz default shader, correct? And it's not working? Can you upload a testrender and the eye surfaces settings?

Ok, had a look at G3M, the base figure. Sorry it seems to be eye moisture and not cornea, I don't use the G3 figures so forgive me. Anyway I converted eye moisture to dz default and applied the settings I suggested for the cornea:

THanks. I did get it to work. I also created a materials preset so I can add it any m7 or m8 eyes.
