dForce products with simulation or invisible plane

I recently purchased the dForce Sunday Afternoon Outfit and the dForce Mary Jane Outfit. The first has an invisible simulation plane and the second has a Mary Jane simulation plane. Both look like ground planes to me. When and how do I use these product features? I can run simulations on the products without them so not sure why they are part of the product. Thanks.

They are there to provide a floor for the item to collide with, if used in a scene without a floor (just for an isolated portrait, say, or using the environment map for the ground).
