Darker Shadow near object

In the picture, I have a "landing gear", but I suppose it can be any object, that is on a plane that is set to catch the shadow. I have UberEnv2 turned on around 35%, and I have a distant light acting as a sun...

The problem I was trying to identify, is that the shadow from the sun is not any darker nearer the object than further? Is there a setting for this?

(The white arrow is the direction of the light/shadow on the ground, and I would expect to see right behind the object it be darker, and get lighter gradually?)

I guess I am looking for a shadow dropoff, but its not included with the distantlight that I can see. Do I have to use a spot and fake it?

Is uberEnvironment set to one of the Ambient Occlusion modes?

OK, perhaps I figured it out. I was not using an image on my UE2 Environment, so there was no "direction" to any shadows. I am trying one now.

Nope, that did not help. Here are my UE2 settings in case that sheds any light (no pun intended) on the issue.

What happens if you remove the distant light?

Thanks Richard, I am not sure what would happen, but I can give it a shot. It seems I would them have to find the appropriate HDR image for UE2, that replaces the lighting that a single sun/distant was giving me :(

Just as a test, to make sure that UE is working - I wasn't suggesting you render it like that for real.
