HDRI enthusiast discussion

I've been thinking about starting this thread for a while now...
Anyone who feels like it and thinks this might be a good idea, write down your thoughts about HDRI's and the like.

Ever since I came across my first sIBL's I was captivated. I'm no expert on the subject (hopefully one day I will be), but I'm quite sure I understand what they're about. This subject makes me want to learn so much about photography. I'll probably get myself a book or ten on the subject once I'm finished with my publicity design course. Only a few months left :-D

So I'll start this off with a question, and hopefully enough people are willing to join in the discussion to make this a good resource.
Has anyone ever created an HDRI from a DS scene?

    Hi

I don't know wether that would be a good idea. I didn't dig in the subject in depth yet but the advantage of HDRI is image based lightning and what is underlying is the ability to light up a scene with realistic light

What would be your goal doing that?

Well, I haven't used DS to create HDR images,
I do use Vue to create those, mostly indeed as images to be used in IBL, be it poser IBL or DS UE2. (Vue has the option to create 'lat-long' images, saved as .hdr, I can use them for DS UE2 lights; with HDR shop I can turn those images into the light probe maps that are used by poser's IBL.)

For my 'normal' rendering I do not see a direct advantage as to making HDR images, after all, the images are mostly made to be used for on screen viewing.... and for that need to be tonemapped....

But like you, my knowledge about HDR is limited, and if there are users out there with more experience on the subject for using this for rendering, I'm surely interested....

Yeah I get what you mean, Takeo. I guess that people like them mostly for realism, but thinking out of the box - it could hold more possibilities than that. But then again as I said I'm no expert either.

Here's a thought - Imagine you have your camera inside a sphere or a box (in DS) and you create a complex lighting inside of it. Then you'd create an HDRI from that and you have something that renders a lot faster than a big bunch of individual lights. I like using LuxRender via Reality as my main rendering engine btw. I find that even simple scenes can take a long time to render with LuxRender. So yeah, rendering time could be a reason. I think it would just be a fun little project.

Also an "artificial" HDRI could find its uses with cartoons or more fantastic situations.

There is a program that lets you create artificial HDRI's by painting light onto your model in a 3D space. I can't remember what it's called off the top of my head. I'll search for it later tonight. I thought their demo video was very interesting.

I can see how an HDRI from Vue would be really cool, and most likely you'll find more uses than one created in DS.

Oh yes, sIBL from hdrlabs are what got me interested in HDRI in the first place.

You can also create HDRIs in Bryce.

Don't know if they count as HDRI or LDR's but I've made some myself. Not from DAZ, but either by mutilating an existing HDR or starting from scratch. For my purposes I am not going for realism, but for a style that isn't gained from realistic HDRI. So I bump up saturation typically, or tint the color of an image for the goal of making the scene light in ways you'd only see in a fantasy world.

Despite having the not so realistic coloring the effect is convincing in my fantasy scenes.

If I had more time I'd prolly look into making an HDRI in Bryce or Vue, but i've got too many tools I'm working on learning ATM.

there are Android, and no doubt iPad HDRI apps
I have a freebie that takes two pics with different light settings I think and constructs a high dynamic range image composite

Here's something that made me better understand how HDRI's are being shot.

Also have a look at this site. Their program lets you "paint" light onto a 3D model. I think it has about the awesomeness that Marvellous Designer has for creating clothes - just this one is for HDRI's.
