Vary Transparency -- Is that Possible?

Is it possible to vary the transparency of characters, or parts of characters, or hair, or clothing, before doing an iRay render? I've looked in Surfaces, and I can't figure out how to do that.

Look for the Cutout Opacity paramter under Geometry under the Surfaces tab.  It can take a greyscale map to have varying opacity.

Are you saying that this will usually or always work? Or, are you saying that this will only work if there is a greyscale map in Surfaces -->Geometry -->Cutout Opacity?

Cutout Opacity (in IRAY, it's a different surface property in 3Delight surfaces) applies to the entire surface.  IF a map is present, it maps transparency across the surface (so you could make only part of the surface transparent).  The value and/or map determine HOW transparent it is.

YES! OK, I found it, and I was able to get two items transparent. So it worked for me in these cases. Thank you very much for your help, both of you. I'm grateful.
