How to define/assign surfaces

I know how to assign textrures or colors to an object in Daz3D, in fact I am fairly comfortable with the surfaces tab after quite a steep learning curve.

But how do I actually create/designate/differentiate multiple surfaces in an object? Are they assigned when I model the object in, say, 3DS Max, like when I do the UV mapping?  Or is there another way?

It's a little more complicated than that.  UV coordinates are part of the geometry.  THOSE are defined when modelling the object(s).

A "material" is a set of faces that has a given shader applied to it.  The UVs of the faces will be from the object  But they can use a different map than another material on the same object.  They will stil use the same UV coordinates on the new map, though.

You can use the geometry editor in DS to assign a selected set of faces to a new material, and also to create groups as well.
