Ripped shirts and other worn clothing?

I'm looking for some modern-day clothes which have a worn and torn look to them. I recently picked up Sickleyields Dirty Denim, which has some excellent transparency maps, but I could use a bit more variation.

Now, when I say 'torn' I don't mean barely hanging on by a thread. Rather. more the kind of stuff your average post-apocalyptic hero and his companions might wear or end up wearing after a fight. It needs to at least cover enough to maintain modesty at all times. Ideally they'd be Genesis compatible items, but for the shirts I'm more than happy to pick up some V4/M4 stuff since shirts tend to work reasonably well with the autofit.

All suggestions are very welcomed. Looking for 'torn' and 'ripped' items lead me to some very unrelated results, so hopefully one of you guys has used something similar in the past and can offer some advice. Thanks in advance.

Mr Hyde sold here comes with some decent pants. You could also try raggerator.

Seems to be very few options for shirts out there. While I'm probably capable of making a somewhat passable transmap for shirts, it goes without saying that it's no match for a professional touch. I'm quite surprised that there doesn't seem to be anything out there which accommodates this requirement.

SereneNight: I tried doing a search for 'Raggerator' but it turned up blank in both Google and Rend/Daz searches. I don't suppose you have any links to point me in the right direction?

Sorry Herald. Was on a handheld and couldn't provide link. It doesn't help that I didn't spell it right. d'oh.

    Here it is.

Thanks for the link. I don't suppose you know if it's compatible with 4.6? Most older Daz shaders seem to work fine, but as this one seems to be procedural it never hurts to inquire first.

    It works in 4.6

here is a quick render on the top tunic of something I'm working on.

Sometimes the rips can look a bit fake and uniform.

The bottom of the tunic is on his right pokethrough not rag-erator, I just have to photoshop it out. Le sigh.

I create grunge and rips in post work. If you are not doing an animation fixing things like poke thrus in post work can save lots of time.

evilinnocence had a free torn shirt for various figures, though I'm having a hard time accessing that site right now, so sorry, no link.

Link found, but now that I look at this again, it may be too skimpy for what you want.

Rag-erator has some issues with Daz 4.6, namely that it uses Daz's temporary folder to store textures in. This means that saving an old file and reloading it results in missing textures as the ones created by Rag-erator are since deleted.

Not a deal breaker, as I can simply copy the file and point Daz in the direction of the copy, but it's still a bit of a pain to do this every time.

Smay has the ragged texture for the Bad Guy tee shirt used in the stalker girl promos available as a free download at http://www.smay3d.com/free_01.htm
Have to buy the shirt in the set first, but is a pretty good texture.

Might be too torn up for what you need, but thought I'd point it out anyway.

Hey! I was in your boat for a while and then I found out how EASY opacity maps are. Really. I'm not even joking, you can even do it in freakin paint (I recommend GIMP or Photoshop though). I'm going to explain it in PS:

    1. Go to the surface of the object, find the texture it's using, open the texture in PS
    2. Create a new layer above the texture. Fill that entire layer white. Change layer opacity to 50% so you can easily see the underlying texture.
    3. Draw in black (on the second, white layer) where you want holes in the texture. There are tons of free photoshop brushes out there, and I use ripped jeans/cloth brushes really often.
    4. Once satisfied, be sure to change the opacity of the white layer to 100% again and save it.
    5. Back in DS, select the same surface that you did in step one, find the opacity strength option and click on the arrow on the side of it. Navigate to your new transparency map and viola! Holes in any texture.

I'm at work so I can't include screenies. Good luck:)

It's good advice, but I'm well versed in creating my own opacity maps and I've done it many times for various different effects. There's no real substitute for the professional touch, and one of the biggest issues with creating your own opacity maps is ensuring they match across seams. All of the 'good' Photoshop brushes for this type of work you need to pay for, and while I might be a reasonable 3D artist, I'm certainly no Michelangelo when it comes to 2D art.

I did create some simple cross-hatched opacity maps, but the end result looked very amateur.

Instead of creating maps which I often do, do it in post work as I suggested before. Do it after the image is rendered.

lol yeah after I posted this you replied to my topic about genesis2 with a fairly detailed explaination, whereupon I remembered posting in here and thought, "what have I done."

I hadn't considered seams though, you're right. I tried to turn a pair of spandex into socks by using an opacity map for the hip and I do remember having an issue with a belt-like strip which might be what you're talking about.

It's useful advice for anyone who stumbles across this thread and wants to try their hand at creating their own rips and tears. One of the big problem areas is around the sides of shirts, as they tend to be where seams cross over. It looks too artificial when everything looks worn and frayed except the area around the seams, especially on some items like the Genesis Essentials T-shirt which has a good few crossover segments like this.

I'm sure I'll come to agree now that I know how to do opacity maps myself. I've been sticking mostly to claw/sword/knife rips so it's been pretty easy to pull off so far xD
