Exposure Balance

I've had issues where the interior of a prop is under-lit and everything outside is over-exposed (blindingly white). Can someone give me advice to balance the light and dark of the scene out?

My first thought would be to add some ghost lights inside to bring up the lighting to match outside, then lower the ISO in the render settings to bring the overall lighting down to a good level.
There's also a camera setup on ShareCG that might help as it's grouped with Iray planes to "remove" everything outside the camera view which will automatically let more light to the inside of your scene.
