Genesis 2 Platform

What is the new Genesis 2 Platform? I'm having some problems understanding whether I even have the Genesis 2 Platform on my computer. I believe I downloaded it however, I can't see where it is in my Daz3d Pro 4.6 program. Can someone with more information than me help me to understand where I can located the new platform on my computer? What makes it different than what I already had? Thanks loads.

Are you installing through DIM or extracting manually.

Manually. DIM doesn't work right. It doesn't install all the parts and I end up having to figure out what parts didn't get installed and trying to install them anyway. So it's manually.

I have no idea why the DIM does not work for you. I have installed nearly 2,000 items with it, and it has always installed the correct folders to the correct places, but that is another story.

The 'Genesis 2 Platform' is another way of describing the new Genesis figure, called Genesis 2. It is an improvement on the original Genesis figure, and it was added to everyone's Product Library when it was released. If you go to your My Account area, and look for Product Library, you should find the file called 'Genesis 2 Female Starter Essentials'

When you have installed it, you will find the new figure in the same place as the original Genesis.

When you have installed it, you will find the new figure in the same place as the original Genesis.

Careful how you phrase that, it isn't in the same place ("Genesis" folder), it's in a parallel folder in the People folder ("Genesis 2 Female" folder). A lot of people have been worried that they can't safely put G2 in their existing content, they don't realise there are no overlapping files so the two figures can safely co-exist.

Well it has never worked for me. I've even called support and they had to help me find out what files were missing. Believe me the installer is a frustrating mess and doesn't work.

So what you're saying is there is no way for me to know whether I have the Genesis 2 figure because it looks just like the old figure, right?

Now this helps a little but I looked in my DAZ Library folders and found People -->Genesis-->characters...but there is no Genesis 2 at all. I downloaded it twice and it stated that the original was there but I still downloaded it. However, I can't find the files on my system. My search in DAZ3d Pro doesn't work anymore and I'm thinking maybe I should just uninstalled the whole program and reinstall but I can't find the uninstall for the DAZ3d program.

I don't think you have Genesis2 installed at all, or if you have, it is not correctly installed.

The reason I said it installs to the same place, is because if you look for Genesis, and you have Genesis 2 installed, you will clearly see it like the image posted below.

Inside the ZIP folder for my Genesis 2, there is a folder called 'Content'. If you installed this yourself, you MUST open the Content folder, and install the folders inside that to your DAZ Studio Library. If you have simply dropped the Content folder into your My Library folder, then DAZ Studio will not see it.

If that is the case, then you need to move all of the folders inside the folder called Content, and move them up one level, so that they are directly under the My Library folder (or whatever you call your DS Library folder)

If you want to uninstall DS, and start again, there is no need to find an uninstaller, when you reinstall any version of DAZ Studio, it automatically removes any previous version (program only, not content)

Thank you so much Jimmy. This should really help. I'm going to reinstall Daz3d Pro 4.6 then see if it pulls up my Genesis 2. If this doesn't I'm going to follow your instructions to the letter and see if I can make this work. I'll let you know if it works or if I really mess up everything. : )

It works. Thanks so much, it took a while to get it all in the right folders and in the right places but it works now so I'm happy.

Now can someone please tell me why none of my content shows up in my Smart Content Folder? It did before I downloaded 4.6 now it only shows up on my Daz Studio Format folders.

Smart Content relies on the CMS (Content Management Service) to display it's content. CMS runs as a process, and not only Smart Content, but Products and Categories need it to be running, as well as the search function in the Content Library pane.

In Windows, check the Task manager to see if it is running. You can also go to Start > All Programs > DAZ 3D, and restart it from there.

    See if that helps.

Hoping you can help me out, Jimmy:)

I tried unzipping the Genesis Starter Essentials G2Female to the Studio/My library folder - it did not show up in Smart Content and I eventually traced the Genesis 2 Base Feale .duf file to My Library/Content/People/Genesis 2 Female . When I try to open from there, I get an error that the /data/DAZ 3D/Genesis 2/Female/Genesis2Female.dsf is missing and it opens a robotic figure.

This missing .dsf file is included with the .zip file, along with many other files that seem to need to go into whatever /data folder is being referred to - but where would that be located? In other words... what comes before /data?

Or have I got the whole setup screwed:(

    Cheers

You can NOT have a CONTENT folder in the My Library folder. That is Nested content folders as far as DAZ Studio goes. Open the CONTENT folder and COPY all in it. Then go up ONE folder and PASTE into the My Library folder.

All DIM zips have a CONTENT folder at top, that CAN not be added to the MY Library or My DAZ 3D Library Folders as it is a Valid folder still used in DS3. Un-ZIP all DIM zips OR OPEN them and only MOVE the folders inside the Content folder to your My Library folder.

So is that why in some freebees the stuff is in a folder called CONTENT instead of My Library? They're using an older version of Daz?

ALL DIM zips use the Content folder format. It is needed for the DIM to install properly when used to install. I myself see no reason for the extra folder to be used, I just live with it. But then I also Love the DIM so do not Hand install very often any more.

Ya, that is one of those things I find hilarious. It's been "my library" since Studio 4 came out yet all content is still packed in a "content" folder. This is certainly not at all confusing.

I've been rebuilding a minor working folder; no way I am downloading 100gig of content to install on a temp comp. So I have been installing all of it to my library even though I am using the poser format. I do it all manually, I have no need of CMS or DIM.

I just open the zip, check the contents, cut everything out of the content folder and paste it in to the my library folder. Everything drops right in to place. A rare occurrence for me when I used installers. When I used installers it was no telling where my content was going to turn up. From what I have read about DIM it's not much better. I got in the habit of installing to a dummy folder, then moving it to my library folder. It was the only way I could be sure my content was all there and in the right place.

But then I have always considered CMS and DIM giving a man a fish. ;-)

Actually the DIM works very well if you understand it. It really just comes down to getting the paths set up in both programs.

I agree, the DIM is the best thing that ever happened to installing content.

It is absolutely painless, and I would not be without it.

Yep, I use DIM for DS3A, DS4.6, Carrara 6 Pro, Bryce 7.1 and Poser 9. All my content goes right where I told it to. Nice bit of kit.

FWIW, I consider the problem more to do with DAZ constantly changing the default content folder name — the important fact is that that's the name of the content folder, not that the folder name is and must always be "Content" or "My Library" or whatever.

It's a tricky situation, really, related IMHO to how people learn to use computers. I've taught a lot of people who've never used computers before, and a lot who have, but aren't familiar with the program we're using, and one of the most important things for them to learn is "there is no ONE TRUE WAY to do anything". Settings can be changed, defaults are only that, and doing something by mouse or by keyboard shortcut are not different*. Once that's settled in the little grey cells, the rest starts to make sense with less effort.

    * Unless the programmers did something horribly worng...

Thanks so much, Jaderrail - that got it working :-)
Not in Smart Content, but it does show up and load from the Content Library.

Must say that at first try, Gen2 does look pretty good.

I once tried using DIM - it listed just about everything I'd ever installed, which would have eaten up a couple of months' worth of broadband allowance, so I only selected the most important stuff. Off it went, downloading something like five files at a time. Then, as each file got to 90% downloaded, it came up with a simple "Download failed" - no reason given. Had to kill it before it used up all my broadband allowance and haven't touched it since.

I Agree with most here in some way, at the point things are in MOST programs now, not just DAZ Studio and DIM, some basic knowledge on how your PC and it's OS functions is required now days. Took me much heartache before I got my Ron's Brushes installed properly in GIMP, but was a breeze in PS CS6. Everyone should try to at least learn the Basic's.

    Hello,

I can see the Poses of Genesis 2 Female and I can load the "Genesis 2 Base Female"-Body. But if I try to load anything else (any of the Poses,...) I get the error "An error occured while reading the file, see the log file for more details".

Does someone have the same problem? I don't know what to do and I cannot attach the logfile to this post (no Textfile, no zip).

    Thank you very much!
