How Do You Save a LIE Material?

When I make a LIE material, I can find no place to save it other than in the main duf file. Should there be a way to save these as a material or something? Did this get forgotten in 4.6 or somewhere along the line?

I see there is a plugin which will do it in earlier versions but I read that in 4.5 it is not needed but built in.

    File -> Save As -> Layered Image Preset
