What file? Is this a DAZ Scene file, if so, what format >DAZ or DUF?

What software. DAZ Studio? What version? What OS are you using?

    It is a .duf format.

    I am using Daz 4.6 on a 64bit windows 7 system.

An error occurred when reading the file.

Can you please look in the log file, Help > Troubleshooting > View Log file. Just after the error occurred, you may see some message that is useful. Do NOT post the entire log file, look and see if there is any error message just after DS tried to open your .DUF Scene file.

'An error occurred when reading the file' is not really very helpful (not your fault), where did you save the file to, and what was in it?

Please keep all of the content relating to this problem in this thread. It may help other users, so I will post it here for you.

0(29) : warning C7050: “_rgb” might be used before being initialized
    Shader Program successfully linked.

    Loading Startup Scene : C:/Users/MAXON/Documents/DAZ 3D/Studio/My Library/People/Genesis/Genesis.duf
    *** Scene Cleared ***
File loaded in 0 min 0.9 sec.
    Loaded file: Genesis.duf
    *** Scene Cleared ***
Json Parser (749494,7): Unexpected end of file in object.
Error reading file, see log for more details.

It looks like you have a corrupted version of the base Genesis.DUF, and I'm not sure how that could have happened. You should never save over the top of the original Genesis file anyway. You may need to reinstall Genesis Starter Essentials to get the original Genesis figure back. I would delete the Genesis.duf file that is giving the problem, then reinstall Genesis starter Essentials, that should fix it.

Ok Thank you Jimmy, I will look at re-install those elements with the software manager.

I saved a new file so, I don't know how I could overwrite her.

My Advice is always use the "Save As" function for a new file and never use CTRL + S for a new scene file as it will sometimes overwrite the original. Once it has been saved then you can use CRTL + S or just "Save".

    OK thanks.

I have actually uninstalled everything. And re-installed it all.

And the Genesis file I deleted earlier is still missing. So I don't know what has happen now. All the People in the library are missing.

I think I will have to wipe any files from the system and start again.

OK I can see a problem, for some reason the software manager is pointing at a 'Public folder' when it should be pointing at 'MAXON' is there a way of changing the root folder form within the software manager?

You can add a new folder by clicking the little 'gear' icon at the top right of the DIM interface. Just uninstall genesis Starter Essentials, and the DIM will put it into the 'Ready to Install' tab. Select your new folder, then reinstall it. There is a Help file along with the DIM which tells you how to use it.

I'm sorry to say this is really messed up. When I open up DAZ after a fresh install it comes up with this.

Could not open the start up scene : C:/Users/MAXON/Documents/DAZ 3D/Studio/My Library/People/Genesis/Genesis.duf
    File does not exist.

Just to add to the confusion, the install manager, seems to be installing to a public folder. When originally when I installed it, I was in the user account MAXON.

I tried installing to a custom folder like you said using the gear at the top right. And changed the location.

It's as if Daz hasn't really reinstalled.

This is where the files are now.

    C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library

I really am stuck now. Is there a way of just clearing everything. I tried to do this before, but I don't think anything changed?

I do suspect the original file was damaged in some way. Because the other files 'Increment saves' work fine.

have you checked to make sure the content locations, both Daz Studio and Poser fomats are mapped in Daz Studio properly http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/11176/#160953

You need to change the location as well as creating a new one, see the image below. Tick the box that says 'Show Details', then select your new folder from the drop-down list (ringed).

Uninstall it again, and make sure you tell DIM to put it in the correct place by selecting your new folder first.

    C:/Users/MAXON/Documents/DAZ 3D/Studio/My Library

That is what you showed earlier as your location, is it not?

I tried to create another instal in MAXON, so that it would look like that path, but it seemed to create a different folder structure.

When you install from the Software manager which folder are you meant to select? is it just 'Documents' ?

How can I be sure I have uninstalled it correctly? For some reason it won't link up with genesis. Even after reinstalling the whole programme.

It is very simple and straight forward.

    Step one install Daz Studio
Step two install content anywhere except Program Files.
Step three make sure the content folder is mapped in Daz Studio like I linked to in Post 12 on page one.
The Content Library Pane (not Smart Content) is a direct representation of your hard drive so if the content folder is mapped accordingly then all your content will show up in the Content Library pane. Anything with metadata should show up in Smart Content when the metadata has run when you first open daz Studio.

Will that work above, I didn't have the recommended DazPoser option for some reason?

I noticed in your screen grab that you are selecting 'Recommended Daz Studio/Poser Content folder. But this option was not in the pull down when I tried to use this dialogue box.

Looking at my screen grab, will this work?

The reason they are different as your screengrab is of the DIM and mine is of the Content Directoty Manager inside Daz Studio. Jimmy's screengrab has Recommended Daz Studio/Poser Content as he is using the defualt location you are not.

What I am trying to get across to you is that when you install to C:/Users/MAXON/Documents/DAZ 3D/Studio/My Library you need to go into Daz Studio and follow my screengrabs and make sure Daz Studio is looking in C:/Users/MAXON/Documents/DAZ 3D/Studio/My Library for your content to show.

You have also created a path in the DIM as C:/Users/MAXON/Documents/DAZ 3D

The path that you quoted for the rest of your content is C:/Users/MAXON/Documents/DAZ 3D/Studio/My Library In other words, you are missing the /Studio/My Library off the end of the path.

If you leave it like that, you will have content in more than one location.

OK I think I have the path selected 'Content Directory Manager' C:\Users\MAXON\Documents\DAZ 3D\My Daz 3D Library

I do fair however that the file that I posted about is corrupted. I'm just glad it is working again. I can build it again.

Thanks for your help, I am very new to Daz, so a lot of the Daz terminology, I have yet to pick up.

    Thanks again
