Newbie Question... Tentacles?

Hi...

I know this will sound dumb, but I was wondering if any experts might have some better advice for me.

I would like to make a model with some tentacles in his arms. I thought of perhaps using a snake model and embedding it there head first, but it is sort of hard to pose.

Does anyone have a better suggestion for making a guy with tentacless that might be more easy to do.

Thanks for the help.

Serene

That is a pretty good idea. As far as I know all snake models are hard to pose. Maybe someone with a better idea will pop in soon, but I like your idea. I never thought of it.

oh thanks. I thought maybe an earthworm would do, but can't find one. There is this really awesome thing called probe which is a robot with cool tentacles, but sadly, not sure it would work for this purpose.

It might be interesting as part of superviillian accesoryt But I want my tentacles on the small side, sort of like extra fingers.....

    Thanks for your help!

    Posable tentacle freebies:
    - http://www.users.freenetname.co.uk/~leatham/downloads.html (And some hilarious poses for these tentacles and V4)

I haven't had the opportunity to use any of these, so I don't know how easy they are to pose, but maybe one of them will be what you're looking for.

I've used a few tentacles recently. The Tentacle Inside is pretty easy to pose, once you get the hang of it. Basically you select a bone and then dial a morph that affects all the "downstream" joints. I also used this one (link below) but I used the main texture from tentacle inside. The Tentaculara Mk II does not have easy pose, so you have to select and position each and every segment. It is a nice freebie, though. Nasty flesh hooks!

Note also that when using a tentacle or snake with many bones, your Scene tab gets so wide, you have to scroll over to see the "eye" icon for making things visible and invisible. Can be disconcerting if you use those a lot (I do).

As far as putting tentacles in the arms, what you can do is position the tentacle(s) in place, parent them to the shoulder part (don't know what that would be on Genesis), then make the arm parts invisible, leaving the tentacles. Might help to have a shirt or tunic to hide the transition, or else do postwork to mask the transition. I did a model with the Daz morphing python for a head on an Aiko 3 body with some reptilian retexturing. It worked well, but was a bear to pose.

oh, this is very useful! Thanks so much! I tried imbedding a probe in the arm to make the tentacle (see here), butt he result is too giger-esque for the concept it is intended for, although i like it. I am trying to make...

Work now. The tentacles are supposed to be skin tone handling tentacles along the character's arms two on each side.

Skin tone is easy enough to do. You could even get some seamless skin texture freebies from ShareCG.com. Hobobo has posted many, many texture sets there. You could also try just using an existing skin texture file in the diffuse channel of the tentacle after setting the diffuse color to white (255 255 255). That would give you an idea of what it could look like. Let us see what you come up with. Looks like an interesting project. :-)
