Iray using CPU instead of 8GB NVidia GPU

Hello,

I recently got a new computer with an 8GB nVidia GeForce GTX 1070 card. It's running the latest drivers and there are no hardware or firmware warnings in the Device Manager.

I've got the latest version of Daz Studio (4.10 Pro) running on the latest iteration of Windows 10.

When I do IRay renders, it's like the GPU doesn't exist. It goes straight to CPU and uses it all up, rendering my computer nearly useless for hours at a time (current render = 28 hours).

This is the log from the start of the latest render:

There's no mention whatsoever of the GPU in there anywhere.

What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions on how to get it to see the GPU?

Thanks!

Silly question - have you gone to the Advanced tab of the Render settings dialog and told Daz Studio to use yopur GPU?  If it's not listed (and as I see you have Win 10) you may need to downlaod a non-microsfot version of the nVidia drivers for the card.

Yeah, go to Window/Render Settings/ Advanced, and make sure you see your GeForce GTX 1070 and make sure there's a check mark next to it, and no check mark next to CPU, like below

This isn't really a guarantee that you have the correct latest drivers — if you've let Windows Update run on your new system, there's a higher-than-it-should-be chance that it's installed Microsoft generic graphics drivers, which are not to the same spec as drivers installed from the NVidia website. The new 10-series cards have a minimum driver version to allow DAZ|Studio to use them; if the generic drivers are low enough spec, they might be below this minimum.

Thanks for the replies! Sorry for my delay in getting back to you. Silly me, I expected to be notified of your replies. Next job, find that setting and turn it on...

@SimonJM, not a silly question at all. I work tech support, and the first two questions are always, 1) is it plugged in, and 2) is it turned on. wink Yes to both in this case.

@SpottedKitty, I updated the drivers directly from nVidia to be sure.

@ebergerly, believe it or not, that's where my settings were when I was having the problem. Ironically, doing nearly the exact opposite of that was what worked. I told it to use the CPU and voila it started using the GPU. Go fig. I've attached a screenclip of my settings in case the sheer perversity of it all can help someone else.

This, right here, is why I say that computers taught me to swear. I used to be such a nice person before I got my first computer.

Not going to complain, my 28-hour render is down to just under 3 hours. Yay!

Thank you all for your help. You've saved me days' worth of rendering time!

It takes a bit of hunting.

    • Go up to the top of this page, or any Forum page. Click on the "cogwheels" icon on the blue band.
    • Click on your name, near the bottom of the menu that pops out. This brings you to your Profile page.
    • Click on the cogwheel in the little blue box (not the cogwheel in the blue band). Click on "Edit Profile" on the pop-out menu, then click on "Notification Preferences".
    • Ignore the top two tickboxes (the "wall" isn't used in the DAZ implementation of the forum) and if you value your sanity, ignore the bottom one. I have the remaining three tickboxes set to "Email"; Private Messages, Comments on My Discussions, and Comments on Bookmarked Discussions.
    • Click on "Save Preferences" then return to the forums.
    • When you want to bookmark a thread, scroll to the top of the page; opposite the large-bold-type thread title is a hollow star (which might be hard to see, depending on your eyes and your monitor colour settings), click on it and it turns bright orange.
    • That should do it. You'll also find a clickable star on pages of forum thread lists, and the "Recent Discussions" list, running down the right-hand side.

Nearly forgot; once you've received a notification e-mail for a thread, you won't get any more for that thread until you click on the link in the e-mail and read the new post.
