Thanks for the feedback, guys. I'm keeping notes and mulling everything over in my head.
This in particular -- I was originally planning to do this for all products going forward, and a couple of mine do this... however I stopped because I was getting reports from people using the low rez textures for very close up renders and being upset at the low quality, or having the texture size in render settings too low and ending up with seams.
What I do now for all products is a hybrid -- I keep the diffuse and normal channels rather high resolution, but scale down things like roughness, height, etc as small as I can. Yes, you can sometimes see effects of the lower resolution (shine in certain light when going in close up due to a low rez roughness for example), but it makes the texture resource overall much more manageable and avoids issues with new users. So this issue should be solved already.
