Autofit smoothing ruined after reloading

I'm having a terrible time with autofit of Genesis clothes to Genesis 2 Female. The clothes look great right after they are autofit. But once I save the scene and reopen it or save the garment as a figure/prop asset and reload it, the smoothing does not look like it looked when I saved it. Even worse, I cannot change the smoothing settings of the autofitted garment to get back to what I originally had. Changing the smoothing settings does almost nothing.

Can you help me figure out if I am doing something wrong, or if this is a DS bug? Anytime you save something and reload it, you should get back the thing you saved. Anything else seems like a serious bug to me.
