optimizing images taking forever

I recently tried a render but the progress box came up with optimizing images and took forever. I think the scene was mainly 3delight stuff, but there may have been a few iray garments in there. Could that be the reason? Is optimizing images vital to a render? Is there a way to stop it or speed it up?

Are you trying to render 3Delight or Iray?

    Render set for 3delight.

    Ah.

Scene Optimization converts all the texture image files (diffuse image maps), any control maps and any image based light maps to the 3DL native format, tdl. It can't/won't render until that process is complete.

So, no way to speed that up, stop it or skip it, I'm afraid.

So if I only use 3delight items/textures that would get rid of the optimization, would it?

No, the TDL maps are created by 3Delight (well, by tdlmake) before rendering each time - even the 3Selight materials don't have them pre-loaded. They also get deleted on File>New or on opening DS.

Cheers. Another question. When rendering will all textures in a scene be optimized, or just the one's that will show up in the render in the viewscreen?

All - after all, they might show in reflections or affect bounce light colour.

There are some things that can help a little. For instance, it is common for content creators to use very large texture files (4096x4096 is not uncommon) which is great if you're doing a closeup where that resolution of detail matters. But most of us don't do extreme closeup images. You can either use a tool like GIMP to create reduced resolution copies of the images, or V3 Digitime's excellent Scene Optimizer also happens to be deeply discounted right now and takes care of that work for you. Using smaller resolution images for textures, transparency maps, etc. will reduce the amount of data that 3Delight has to convert.

    Thanks for the info guys.

  • If you have lost of ram say 32GB or more then install a ram disk, I use ROG ram disk, setup useing a path r:/Daz and set about 50% of system ram 10gb to 16gb

Then open Preferences in menu or press F2, look in General Tab for DSON cache Files and change the path name to r:/Daz to match your ram disk

You will get a speed increase from 100 to 10 seconds! just bepends on the speed of your computer I guess!

Other than that chage to SSD harddrive! but speed will only reduce about 50%
