Iray Shader for Wet Hair

I already have Linday's short wet hair which is great, but I'm looking for a shader that mimics hair that is, well, wet.

I have a character with shoulder-length hair, and it holds up well to dforce simulation so I can give it the shape of being wet. Without a shader, though, it just looks greasy. So I made a geoshell of the hair, and I've tried using the default water shader---this gives the hair a blue tone and reflects too much light to look naturally wet. Any suggestions/help are appreciated!

Hmm, I don't have Linday's wet hair but I wishlisted it just now. Looks cool.

I'm curious what would happen if you just Ctrl-DblClick to apply Linday's wet hair shader on any other hair. Ctr-DblClicking a shader lets you 'ignore' images, thus keeping the hair's textures while overlaying the glossy/specular and other settings which contribute to the 'wet' appearance. Might be worth a try.

Personally, in the past, I've just used Mec4d's wet fabric shader for hair (I just remove the fabric normal map): https://www.daz3d.com/mec4d-pbs-shaders-vol-2-for-iray

  • Thanks, Toonces---I didn't know about the ctrl dbl click. I did try to just copy/paste from Linday's shader with bad effect. Would that also allow you to copy a hair shader to a different set of hair?

And I happen to have that shader package from Mec4d, so now I've got two options! Cheers

Sure. Shaders can be applied to any selected surface(s). On the other hand, materials can only be applied to the specific surface(s) for which they're designed.

Even if Linday's shaders are 'materials' you can convert them into 'shaders' by selecting the hair surfaces using File > Save As > Shader Preset. Once they're shaders, they can be applied to anything. And of course holding down Ctrl button when applying lets you avoid overlaying textures.

  • Huh, these some good tips. I was unaware of the ctrl+dbl click solution. I'll have to try that next time I need a certain wet hair asset. Thanks

  • Linday's short wet hair comes with the shader included, you can find it under shaders.

save one of the surfaces as a shader, then apply it to what you want.

you will have to switch textures - or iirc, hold CTRL when applying it and then make sure to not apply textures.
