It will be, when the majority of vehicles are automated. Until then, it's just "not less safe than letting a human drive."
I don't know, most ten year old cars only go for a couple thousand bucks. I see no reason to believe self-driving cars will be different once they launch.
...well there will be a lot of folks who won't be able to afford them and it will take more than a decade for costs of even "used" vehicles to come down to an affordable level for those on the low rung of the income ladder. I see a lot of 10 year old cars going for 5 digit figures today, particularly those that had a higher initial sticker price (like autonomous ones will). Those cars going for a couple thousand today are on the low end of the reliability scale and fixing them is expensive due to all the proprietary components and computerisation.
Long gone are the days you could play "driveway mechanic" and fix most things yourself.
What on earth are the prices like by you? I can get 2017 models for 10k. :\
Toyotas are still dirt cheap and reliable.
...Portland. A 2017 vehicle for 10K? Maybe for a used Smart "pod" od similar clone that would get run over by one of those big jacked up diesel pickups or SUVs.
However, lively as this discussion has become, I feel we've just slipped more than a tad off course here and may be in danger of straying into space we shouldn't enter.
I misspoke, it's 2016 that are all around 10k, the 2017 are more like 13-14k list price. I know now I should never move to Portland if I have to pay that much for something from 2007.
I'd post Star Wars renders but everything I want to do is reallllllly spoilery.
...the high prices are for cars that list in the 35$K - 45$K range which will most likely be the lowest price for a basic 4 place autonomous family sedan. A two person driverless "pod" with little to no cargo room will be less but still not down to where subcompacts are priced today just because of the development costs involved.
Oh, and I'd avoid Portland more because of the ridiculous housing costs, narrow often congested streets, and hard to find parking.
I'll be interested to see the issues which occur when (and if) driverless vehicles become pervasive. There's already a lack of trust of them (with good reason). So just imagine when you start getting accidents due to stuff like equipment failure, or it just made a mistake because the road was covered with ice and slush and it got confused, or someone somehow hacked the system (it will happen), and so on. Then people will pull back, and there will be a movement against them. And the pendulum will swing. Just like internet technology. That pendulum is already starting to swing back. People are starting to realize the negative aspects. The incredible dangers from hacking, the dangers of being locked to our social media 24 hours a day, the dangers of instant gratification, and so on.
There is no perfect technology, as much as we want to wish it's all awesome. We love to think everything is awesome, but it isn't. Everything has good aspects and bad aspects. And we love to dismiss it as the older folks saying "get off my lawn" (we did that with our parents when I was a kid, and that's pretty much mandatory for every generation ). But the older folks already know that everything has good points and bad points, and we shouldn't ignore the bad points just because it's more fun to think it's awesome.
Personally, I'm probably one of those people who, when I'm in a self-driving car, will be constantly stressed and worried that it will have a 3 second glitch going 70 mph and slam me into a guard rail and over a bridge. I can't imagine being able to sit back and relax.
By the way, am I the only one who misses the days when "awesome" actually meant something?
It was a word reserved for when you first saw the Grand Canyon. And it actually filled you with awe. Now it's a feel-good, throwaway word that is totally meaningless. It's like we're trying to force some sort of utopia into existence merely by saying everything is awesome.
Okay, well back to the subject at hand...
Finally have a nice way to jump between Blender and Substance Painter, so I did some more tweaking of my Star Wars fighter thing I forget the name of. Here's a render of my first shot at some Substance painting, and then rendering in Blender. I'm thinking next step is to add some detail with the micro-displacement in Blender. And I realize for the hardcore Star Wars folks this isn't an exact replica of the fighter thing, cuz I really don't care about copying the movie. So sue me.
...maybe a prototype?
Same here.
I say go for it, LOL
Anyhoo, here is one to get back on topic. DS, no postwork.
...nice.
Good job. I have a speader model but it’s not that detailed.
Thanks. Say what you want about EA, but I really enjoy SW Battlefront and the models are amazing quality.
How do you use models from games? I'm guessing you need expensive software other than DAZ? I would love to use the models from Battlefront 1 that I have and Mass Effect. Alas I don't have the software or knowledge.
If you have the games, there is usually a developers tool used for modding that can extract the mesh and textures legally for personal use. .FBX format usually comes out rigged and then it can be posed in a few other apps (I use Max) and then imported into DS as an .OBJ
...yeah not being into games does limit that ability. Once on the Cars and Bikes thread I saw a lovely 1960s GM "fishbowl" city bus. Turned out it was extracted from GTA. Also seen nice "real" aircraft which were extracted from X-Plane. To get RL models like these commercially will set you back 50$ - 100$ (or more) at sites like TS and CG Trader.
I did find a speeder model that I was able to import into Bryce, then export to OBJ. Problem with that is the OBJ now has like 100 material surfaces named Material1, Material1, etc. Pain in the butt to convert the textures to IRAY beacuse you don't know what is what. For example, it's hard to find the cockpit glass to convert to IRAY glass. The model I got from VanishingPoint is ok, but not completely accurate. I'm going to try a render using the OBJ speeder.
..had that happen with a 3DS bus model I converted to .obj in Hexagon..
yeah, I run into models with those types and amount of material zones often. It can be a pain assigning shaders to them all, but once done I save it for future use. I find the task of doing it not any harder than modeling an object and assigning UVmapping. If you have the ability invest in other apps for specific tool needs. I use carrara often for importing and posing .FBX files. I use Ultimate Unwrap 3D for most file conversions, creating new material zones, UVMapping, simple mesh mods, etc.
best way to assign shaders to material zones. Load the object into DS, go to the Surfacing/rendering tab. turn on IRAY preview and when you slect a material zone, it will highlight the area on the model covered by that material. Then select the textures or shaders you want and move on to the next. makes it pretty easy.
True. I have been a gamer and modding games since the late 80's. Due the amount of games I own I have a fairly large collection of mesh items I can use for personal use.
Thnks for the tip,
OK here is my attempted. One is detailed one has been filtered for a more painted look. Best I can do with what I have.
...yeah just not into games very much as too many are the "shoot/slice/beat em up" or "dungeon crawl" variety for me, gets boring quick. Sim games like X-Plane and Gran Tourismo are about the only kind I like but to really get the best performance and experience you also need the proper control interfaces and those can be expensive just by themselves (and for GT you need a Playstation).
Cool, if those are the VP ones, they don't look too bad at all. Might try playing with the camera angles and distances for a more dramatic look.
They are not from VP.
I finally figured out how to tilt/rotate the camera the way I wanted LOL. I'll experiment a little.
Better? Yes? No?
Much better.
...indeed.
