This is NOT going well! :(
Ok, so I downloaded Daz. Installed with the install manager and run the program.
Failed at the first hurdle with the tutorial... No content.
Went through the MASSIVE file regarding what to do about this... Couldnt restart the CMS because 'it has no service linked to it) THATS not in the help file!
Next step, uninstall with the uninstall link... NO uninstall link. Ok, so I'll uninstal from the control panel... Um, no I wont, its not in the programs list there either!
NONE of this is in the help file!
Ok, lets uninstall everything I CAN uninstall.
Nope, nothing will even 'start' to uninstall the uninstall/change button in control panel just stares blankly at me saying.. 'I'm not sure what you want me to do?' Nothing runs!
So now, I'm left with a CMS I cant uninstall and 32 and 64 bit versions of Daz that I cant uninstall!
This is not a great start for a new user!
Please help!

If you installed through the DIM, then you uninstall through the DIM as well.
As for the content, before going through all of this, did you install the Genesis Starter Essentials?
Well I had the Genesis model loaded if thats what you mean?
I ticked everything that the Download Manager could possibly download and downloaded it and then installed it. There were no further instructions to install anything else. I figured it was 'all there' ready to go?
The only thing I can think of is remove the Daz Studio through DIM, and download the actual installer from your product library and install it like a normal *exe. Then you can actually see the prompts and know whether or not the CMS is installed properly.
First of all, the DIM installs content to C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library by default, do you have that library listed as both DAZ Studio AND Poser Formats in your Content Directory Manager?
For the CMS, on Windows, go to Start > All Programs > DAZ 3D and start it from there.
Well, I need to do 'something'
I did what you suggested, I uninstalled EVERYTHING, from the install manager, and rebooted my PC, then fresh, I re-installed everything from the install manager, and now (even though it says it IS installed) when I run the program it says it cant find the 'genesis start up file'
The folder its looking for daz/content... doesn't exist!
I appreciate your help, but am amazed that I'm having this much issue installing a product that HAS a manager to take care of it all for you!
If I wasn't in need of Daz for checking created content, I would quit at this point. It's ludicrous that it should fail so badly, and then not have up to date information in the help files!
I am a very frustrated user who doesn't have hours and hours to spend solving problems of this nature :(
/rant off... Apologies.

Jimmy C, thanks for your reply..
But what does 'do you have that library listed as both DAZ Studio AND Poser Formats in your Content Directory Manager' actually mean?
I am totally new to this, and these terms mean nothing to me, sorry.
Art.
You know the most ironic thing of all this? This actually gave me a much needed laugh.
The 'content' that started all this, is now working! I just have no Genesis model to use it on! lol

Have you downloaded and installed Genesis Starter Essentials and Genesis 2 Female Starter Essentials
Yes I have.
Art.
I re-downloaded the genesis start kits and anything that said Genesis...
I re-installed it all.
It still doesn't work.. It still says it cant find Genesis.dsf in the installed directories 'content' folder...
Perplexed.
Please help,
Art.
Ok, I'm going to need help here...
I have found the missing files.
For some reason they are installed under Daz/content/data/Daz3d/Genesis/base
The program is looking for them in daz/people/Genesis
What do I move? How can I make this work?
Do I move all the files in 'base' to 'Genesis' and if I do this, what about all the other hundreds of files in Daz/content/data/Daz3d/
Why has it done this?
If Genesis is installed correctly, then you should find it in the Content Library > DAZ Studio Formats > My DAZ 3D Library > People > Genesis.
If you had a previous version of DAZ studio installed, your new installation may still be looking for the old Startup file which has changed format. Go to Edit > Preferences > Startup and look at what file it is trying to load in 'Load File' If it is in DSF format, that is the problem, it should be looking for C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library\People\Genesis/Genesis.DUF if you have installed to the default folder.
If you go to Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager, that is where DS stores all of the information on where to find installed content. If you have installed to the default DIM location, make sure that it is listed as stated previously.
DO NOT move any of the files in the /data folder. Pleas read my post above before doing anything.
Next step... I moved all the files in 'base' to Genesis, so the program could at least find Genesis.dsf
Now I get the error 'An error occured while reading the file, see the log file for more details'
I cant even get it to work by putting the files it wants in the place it's looking for them!
Anyone?
Thanks in advance for your Help.
Seems we were typing at the same time JimmyC,
I have uninstalled and deleted everything.. am starting over so it is at least from a stock install.
Heres something I didnt know until 5 minutes ago! The wife installed Daz about 2 years ago, and couldn't get it to work (ironically) so uninstalled it!
It seems this is where my problems are coming from.. Sheesh!
Anyway, thanks for your patience all... Jimmy, I am doing as suggested.. bare with me.

One further question...
I dont want content on my C: drive, I want it on my D: drive. Is it safe to move it all to the D: drive location and update where Daz is looking for it?
I have done nothing until I hear from you.
Ok, ignore that last question for a minute...
I honestly feel like banging my head into a wall!!
I have re-installed in the default location, so it is easier for you folks to help me.
I have installed EVERYTHING in the download manager.
I have changed the 'startup' file as suggested by JimmyC, and now I get a window pop-up that says Missing files: Some assets needed to load were missing. The coontent may now work as intended. The following could not be found: /data/DAZ 3D/Genesis/Base/Genesis.dsf
Now I take it that, that is the OLD file... But does that mean it won't work correctly?
Thanks
Art.
No it doesn't work correctly...
The model loads now, but is all boxes rather than detail!

Have you looked at the paths that are entered in the Content Directory Manager as already explained?
Are they pointing to your new library, My DAZ 3D Library?
Oh man! SERIOUSLY!! (My anger at the program not you Jimmyc - I assure you)
I updated where it's looking for content in the Content Directory manager... I 'guessed' that the default location its looking for is C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library. Even though the original file was looking for a folder called 'content' which doesn't seem to exist in this install of Daz 4.6.
Now, the model loads lovely... With NO ERRORS! Woohoo!!
However.. Now, we are back to having no content!!
Art
Please go to the Content Library pane to look for your content. If it is not visible, go to Window > Tabs > Content Library and you can then dock it anywhere you like. In that pane, there should be DAZ Studio Formats and Poser Formats.
Look in DAZ Studio Formats > My DAZ 3D library > People > Genesis, and you will find most of your free content there. If you are looking in Smart Content, it may not be working if the CMS (Content Management Service) is not running.
The operation could not be completed. The system could not find the file specified.
This happens when I try to 'start' the CMS :(
I can find my content under the Content Library.. But shouldn't it show Under smart content?
Thanks for your help again JimmyC, it's really appreciated.
Art.
Smart Content relies on the CMS to be running, and it also relies on the items having Metadata associated with them (not all items have Metadata).
The Content Library will always show your content, even if it does not have Metadata, and even if the CMS is not running. The CMS is also used for the Search function in the Content Library, and for the Products and Categories sections of the Content Library as well. If you are using Windows, go to Start > All Programs > DAZ 3D, and uninstall the CMS from there.
To reinstall it, you will need to reinstall DS4.6 again, but now that it is set up correctly, it shouldn't change anything, but you may get the CMS working.
Thanks JimmyC...
I have it working now, and I don't think I'm going to touch it again.
Your help was amazing, thanks.

Glad it's working for you now, have fun :)
You would probably have been better off not using DIM at all. I do everything the old fashion way, manually.
As Scotty said "the more complicated the plumbing the easier to stop up the works".
The DIM is not complicated at all in my opinion. It has a filter, so you do not need to ask what files to download. It installs the files where you tell it to, and I have installed about 1800 items using it so far, with no errors or problems.
I would not go back to manually installing DS content, and DIM is the best thing that ever happened to content installation. All you need to do, is read the Help file and installation instructions to know what to do with it. It really is simple.
Simple as it may be, I have never had need of it. But I have read multiple posts about people having issues with it. Like CMS I have no need of it, don't use it, and the one time I didn't immediately uninstall it, it complete locked up my computer for hours the next time I started my comp. Further more, like DIM I constantly read threads from people that are having issues with it.
I live by the KISS principle, and would rather not complicate this with apps I have no need of. It's the give a man a fish thing ;-)
I am with Jimmy even though I don't use DIM. What is casuing more issues than anything else is Daz3D changed to defualt locations for content to be installed to.
Agree. Content is still packed in a content folder, not a "my library" folder. That is in no way confusing.
Right now I am sort of rebuilding my content library. I download content piece by piece as I need it. That way I don't have a bunch of issues popup all at once. I can solve them as they occur ;-)
