How can you save copies of a render as it progresses?

I just canceled a render that was going for 2hours. I wanted to save it then resume so I could compare a 4 hour render to a 2 hour render.  The problem is as soon as I saved the render window closed and I couldn't resume. Is there anyway to save a renders progress?

For example if a render lasts 8 hours, could I somehow save out renders every hour? That way I can compare how a 2 hour render looks vs an 8 hour render.

File>Save Last Render, perhaps - I haven't actually tried doing it that way.

If I remember correctly you stop the render, don't cancel or save the image, go to studio and File/Save Last Render. Go back to the render window and click resume.
