Daz repeatedly crashes my system (Mac Pro)

For the past two days, while working in Daz, the program will freeze, I get the spinning wheel and the only available option is to restart my computer.

I don't know if this is a program issue or if something is wrong with my computer. So far this only happens when I work in Daz.

I hope this is the right forum category to post in.

Which version of (I assume) Daz Studio? Do you get an error message or crash report? Have you checked the log fil (Help>Troubleshooting>View Log File, if DS will stay open that long)? What are your system specs?

I am using DAZ Studio 4.10. No error message, just a spinning wheel and nothing works until a restart. Photoshop, Finder, nothing else is accessable.

Does this happen on launch, or later on? Does it seem to be associated with particular functions or activities?

It happens while I am working, not on launch. Today it happened once, I think I was moving a character. The computer only freezes while I am working in Daz Studio, not when I am in a different application.

If it tends to happen when something is chnaging in the viewport my suspicion would be a GPU, or possibly mouse, issue. What are your system specifications?

Here are my specs for system. Could it be a hard drive issue? I recently installed a new hard drive and occasionally experience issues in Photoshop that are different from the crash in Daz. The issue I am having in Photoshop is that my Cintique pen experiences a lag occasionally. To fix that I also have to do a restart.

I don't know, I'm not a Mac expert. Both could be related to event handling or the data bus, but I'm not sure how you'd look into that on a Mac.

    Hi,

do you have a Spinlock log in Console.app that you can share?
It's probaby in the path /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ in console.app side bar, named something like DAZ Studio....date.. .memory_resource.diag or .wakeups_resource.diag

Apple has changed them in 10.13 so it's a little tricker than before to finsd the info you want.

How long did you wait and what preview mode do you have in the viewport? Some clothes do have the "Interactive Update" switched on in smoothing and that have make the machine freeze for up to a minute sometimes if you move the figure. I run on a Mac Pro 2013 with D700s but otherwise pretty much the same machine.

I have the aux viewport in IRay preview mode. May be I'll close it and see if that would make a difference.

My system just crashed again. THe frustrating thing is, that nothing works anymore after the spinning wheel appears. I can't switch to Photoshop, Finder or anything else for that matter.

I found two files that might help. I wasn't able to attach nor could I copy and paste them into this window. They are too long.

    Once is called:

DAZStudio_2018-07-18-124546_Macintosh.wakeups_resource.diag   It's dated yesterday and the other one is called

DAZStudio_2018-07-17-134407_Macintosh.crash  and it showed up right after my last crash.

Would either one of those be helpful?

    Hi,

Both files may be useful. When you say your system crash, is that a kernel panic or it just hangs? As DAZ Studio has a crash log it looks like it crashes but that would not really tear anything else down.

I use Daz Studio on my iMac and a while back I had a lot of trouble with it crashing when I was working on figures. I picked up a tip from one of the threads to set instancing optimization to 'Memory' rather than 'Speed' and doing that has significantly cut down the number of times it crashes. This probably isn't anything to do with what is happening with your machine @AnneWertheim but it might be worth a try? I still get the occasional spinning dial issue that you do, but not as often as the several times a day that used to occur. When it does happen, I too have no idea how to stop it other than to do a hard shut down.

The setting is in the pane:  Render Settings>Optimization>Instancing Optimization

I've noticed that when I use 3Delight and then go back to Iray, I have to reset the settings to 'Memory' again.

Also, I close Daz Studio after each scene I've worked on and then reopen it to work on a new scene. I read somewhere on a thread about this clearing the memory properly and so I started doing this too. I read a lot of threads, lol. Some of what I do is probably not necessary, but if it seems to work for me I stick with it.

This is just a thought,  But have you tried running First Aid,  Also have you tried resetting the PRAM/NVRAM - to do this reboot your mac & before you hear the chime press and hold the following keys CMD + OPTION + P + R until you hear the startup chime a 2nd time.

It might also be a good idea to reset the SMC (System Management Controller) by shutting down you Mac, then Press the Left SHIFT + CONTROL + OPTION & the POWER BUTTON all at the same time until your Mac turns on,  Then turn your Mac on normally to finish the operation.
