Updating Metadata Labels

Hi,

Whenever I move some .duf files from one folder to another folder, the coloured file-type labels that appear at the top of each thumbnail are no longer shown.  So, for example, when I move a pose file, the yellow 'Pose' label disappears from the thumbnail image.  Now, I already know how to fix this.  I go into the Content DB Editor and then select the files of each type in the top pane, and then select the type in the drop-down menu in the bottom pane (see attached image).   I was wondering if there's a faster, more automated way of doing this.  I mean the database is clearly aware of what the type of each file is because it's shown in the top pane (the 3rd column).   So isn't there some quicker way of recreating these labels?

Since I move a LOT of content into folders that make more sense to me, I'd love to know this as well. So far, I've done the exact same thing that you're doing.

You very likely only  "fixed" the metadata partially by just reassigning the label again.

You may need to double check that the "categories" are still properly set up as poses and the compatible figures are still defined.

IF everything is working properly as it was before you should be able to see all installed poses in the "Posing" tab for DAZ Studio as well.

With everything set up correctly DAZ Studio is able to detect what figure is selected in the scene tab and shows compatible poses.

    Poses in the "Posing" pane

Poses in the "Smart Content" pane

Note: Filter by Context is activated. Files view is selected.

It is recommended not to move around any product files and folders in the windows file explorer.

IF you feel like creating your own kind of logic for poses use the "Categories" system.

    - Create your custom category

Name the category the same way you would name your folder in windows file explorer

    - Right click on any pose preset and assign it to the category.

You can select multiple presets at the same time by using CTRL, ALT, mouse and then right click on the selection - Categorize.

    - Now you can browse your own custom pose categories in either the Smart Content or the Posing tab

    Side Note:

What happens when you move around DAZ Studio preset files in the windows file explorer?

    - You break the metadata and files will not anymore show up everywhere in DAZ Studio. Preset files do not just show up in the Smart Content tab but also in tabs like surfaces, posing, lights, cameras etc.

    - Without properly set up metadata DAZ Studio is not anymore able to tell what files are in the scene. Compatible files are not shown anymore in the corresponding panes.

    - You are not anymore able to completly uninstall all files of a product because the uninstaller only "remembers" the default location

    - You are not anymore able to update the product properly when newer versions of the product are released.

Sometimes products are updated when a new Iray version provides new options for the existing material or shader files.

    - When you install products again either with the DIM or Connect or even manually the duplicate files you allready moved around manually may create errors in the database.

If you need more information about category creation or metadata check the official guide:

Yeah, I know all the reasons that not moving files is good advice. :) My problem has always been that I have enough older content and free content from other sources that I don't really trust the "Smart Content" feature. And spending a couple of months categorizing 10,000+ products by hand myself doesn't appeal (especially if you've ever had a Content DB crash and lost all of your custom categories). I find it's easier to just move the files the way I like to see them and then, if necessary, update the Content DB by hand as well. I still have to watch for updated products, but since I'm leaving the geometry and texture files where they were installed, I deal with the other updates by hand as well.
