Genesis Males - M4 or M5 shape?

Which do you prefer?
And also, if you bought a character for the M5 shape would you expect it to come with M5 maps, or would you be fine with having M4 maps?
As someone who is currently working on some Genesis male characters with a view to releasing them I would like some feedback on this.

Thanks for any replies :)

I just don't care the least little bit about UVs on a Genesis character. Doing it for M5 might give you better compatibility with the future G2M, though, if they go with M5 maps for him the way they went with V5 maps for G2F.

I think more people use the M5 than M4 morph for Genesis. I prefer to mix them because I hate M5 Hero and I hate M5's default face whereas I feel M4's is better as a base for mixing features.

Good point about the G2 and M5 UVs. I only have M4 resources, but I suppose I couls try reworking them for M5.

I must admit I prefer the body shape for M5. I usually reduce the M5 head parameters to get a charcter the way I prefer them to look. I've been using a mix of both for personal projects, but so far have made one Genesis character with M4 with a view to selling. I suppose I could try and make an M5 version as well, even though it would be more work.

No I wouldn't be fine with M4 maps if its a M5 character that is what I expect to get.
We have seen from the corrected UV for Genesis that the Gen4 maps don't lie right.
Also as we have seen with genesis2 Female if you want to use the V4 maps a product has to be purchased, in anticipation of M6 release I will not buy any more M4 textures.

Thank you for your reply; that's basically what I thought, and you make a good point about the m5 UVs sitting better too.

At present, there is no delivery date for G2M. If you are trying to establish yourself as a vendor, you might want to go with M4. At least that way, you might pick up some sales if your texture offers something M4 users like.

Do you mean the M4 shape for Genesis, or M4 himself?

I use M5 more than M4 shape. I would prefer that the M5 character came with M5 maps though since I'm assuming that G2M might go the same route as G2F. However, I don't mind M4 maps as long as they're nice and look like something I might use. :)

I don't really buy m4 characters any longer. I prefer m5 as my goto character.

Even if the character is for the m4 shape for Genesis?

Lol, I'm not sure who they used for that M5 hero morph, but he looks like some giant neanderthal :S

M4 looks like a normal human being, whereas M5's shape is totally disproportional from the get-go.

I use a combination of both however. Plus my own personal myriad of morphs/morph fixes from z-brush.
So if you were to buy a Genesi character would you prefer the M4 shape and maps to M5?

I don't have a particular attachment to M4 shape, however, if the Uv's were for M5, then I woud consider it. I just don't want more M4 uv's with Gen 6 around the corner.

That's how I started out using Genesis. Then I moved on to combining them both since my characters looked closer to my original gen 4 character prior to Genesis. (Most of my characters came from Gen 4, but they were always slightly off when moving to Genesis).

I've moved on to making my own morphs now :)

One day, maybe if I have the time and the inclination I'll release one of my superhero shapes. That's always been like a long-term goal that I never got around to.

    :)

Keep working on them, you never know, you might get to a point where you feel you want to release them :)

I absolutely agree with SickleYield in that I haven't had reason to care as to which UV set is used. I publish at least two male Genesis character renders a week on my deviantArt account and UV choice has never emerged as an issue. What I have found, however, is that I am using M5 and D5 texture sets as I find them to be of better quality all round than the old M4 sets that we're previously my go-to textures. Raiya's more recent work has impressed me in particular.

As for shapes and such, I'm grateful to have a large range of options, whether it be old M4 transfers via GenX or DAZ's Evolution, Muscularity, M5, D5 and H5. Not to mention the some of the many excellent character morphs from PAs.

Although I'm looking forward to Genesis 2 Male, I'm wondering how much better it will be, given how impressed I am with what can be done with Genesis 1.

I agree with this. There is nothing worse then buying a Generation 5 titled character and getting a generation 4 Texture. If I buy "X character for Victoria 5/Michael 5" I expect it to use V5 or M5 UV textures. Theres a million and one generation 4 textures out there, and tbh I'm sick of converting them with map transfer tool then spending countless hours cleaning up distortions in PS.

Like Scorp, I no longer buy gen4 textures, and any of my most favorite Gen4 textures I have, I have already converted them to M5/V5 UVs. There are some nasty areas of distortion on genesis with the Gen4 UV.

Honestly, it doesn't matter to me which map you use. All I request is if you plan to have body/facial hair you also have a version without. Most of my work is in the teen/child genre for greeting cards. There are some excellent textures people have released but their hairless versions sometimes are obviously shaved which is bad for closeups. Children don't tend to shave and leave stubble :P Had to scramble for a skin for a swimming competition render as I didn't notice the skins I had chosen showed stubble. I'm not the greatest at post work so "hiding" hair or stubble is difficult for me.

I would prefer M5 over M4 but as someone above also said before, with GenX and other shapes you got so much variation that you can combine M4 and M5 and others until you find your prefered goto-guy. I usually go with D5 however. The shape works best for regular guys as it was made for rather small framed guys instead of these bulky muscle hulks. And the details are better than those on all the other G1 shapes so far.

I tend to blend M4, M5 and D5 most of the time.

Thanks for all the replies. It seems there's a mix in preference, and that a number of people like to mix up the M4 and M5 base shapes.
