Can you change the texture shader of an old M4 outfit but maintain the design elements?

  • That's hard to say without more detail. If you are applying the Iray Uber Base it is already trying to convert while retianign the existing maps, but for soem other shader presets (especially those that apply rtheir own maps) you could try holding down the ctrl/cmd key while double-clicking and then in the dialogue that opens select Ignore for Maps (which tells DS to skip any map settings and use the existing ones for that property, if there are existing maps - going from a basic 3delight, or even Poser, material to iray there will be a lot of new properties without existing maps).

Taking a look at that model, I think if you want to keep the brocading, you're going to have to create a new texture map to accomplish it. It would be easy enough to use a product like Destiny's Garden's Iray Surface Builder - Cotton Denim Wool (a product I use a LOT, along with it's companion for Leather, Suede and Velvet when I'm changing the look of clothing) to say change the fabric of the tunic and pants to a rough wool. However, unless I miss my guess, it would make the whole piece a single color and you'd lose the details.

An alternative to creating a whole new texture that I might use is to find the current texture file, make a copy, and erase everything except for the brocade. Then you can change the base texture however you like and load the brocade as an Overlay layer after the fact.
