Installation issues

I had some problems (can't actually remember what they all were, and I don't think they're particularly important now anyway), so decided to completely reinstall DAZ and all my content.

So I uninstalled (and then went through deleting all the DAZ folders everywhere that remined), and then reinstalled.

Note: I installed my content to C:\ProgramData\DAZ 3D\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library (I didn't want it in Public Documents, because Windows Backup kept backing it up and taking up loads of space).

Several issues appeared or remained:

1) I installed while logged on with my Admin account.  When I log in as a non-Admin account, I don't get the shortcuts I should in the Programs menu.  (Just DAZ 3D\DAZ PostgreSQL CMS\Uninstall DAZ PostgreSQL CMS).  The shortcuts to DAZ Studio, Installation Manager, and Hexagon are missing.

2) When logged in as Admin, none of the content was visible in DAZ Studio.  All the icons were blank, and when I tried to add something to the scene, I got a message saying the file didn't exist.

3) When I logged into my normal user account, the content was visible, but all the icons were greyed out.  Right-clicking gives me an option to "Install" them, whichseems to mean creating/copying a huge amount of data in C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Daz Connect Library\data\cloud.  This is taking a very long time, and wasn't something I had to do when I originally installed everything.

Is this all expected behaviour, and if not, what do I need to do to make it behave properly?

  • I suspect teh issue is the use of program data, it may be a protected location (like Program Files). If you want to use a diffrent location to avoid back-up I would create a new root folder (say "Resources") and put the content directory in there. The connect install is because the DIM install isn't accessible, so it's getting files from Daz for a fresh install.

  • Thanks.  Would that just involve moving the My DAZ 3D Library folder to somewhere else, and telling DIM and DAZ that's where it is now, or is there anything else I need to do?

  • With luck, yes - at least for DS, DIM does track the exact folder installed to. However, if this is some kind of pemissions issue it may be safer to uninstal/reinstall.

Ok, I tried moving the files, and that didn't work.

So I uninstalled, deleted everything, and reinstalled (using C:\DAZ_data\My DAZ 3D Library as my content folder) - and I still get the same problem:

    1) With my Admin account, all the content is missing in Daz (just the exclamation mark symbol)

    2) With a non-admin account, the content is greyed out, and insists on downloading to the "cloud" folder before it can be used.

  • The database itself is in a user-account folder (C:/Users/YOU/AppData/Roaming/Daz 3d/cms/ContentCluster) by default, so its not being seen in the other account makes sense. You can set an alternative location in Edit>Preferences>CMS tab.

Are you sure you have C:\DAZ_data\My DAZ 3D Library set as a Daz Studio Content directory in DS?

  • I hadn't.  I have now, and it seems to be working intermittently.

I think it works if I have both DAZ and DIM open, and use DIM to install the content.  However, if I use DIM to install it while DAZ is closed, it is greyed out when I open DAZ.  If I use DAZ to install, it puts everything in the cloud directory.

  • If you close DS and immediately open DIM (or vice versa) that can cause a problem as PostgreSQL may still be closing when DIM starts, causing signals to get crossed the database not to be updated. As long as DS and PostgreSQL are definately closed (check Task Manager) that should be OK, though it's simpler to run both DS and DIM at once.
