Getting ready to re-install Daz Studio

Hi everyone;

A couple of questions. 1: Which version (stable) of DS should I install?  I got my new pc built now, so it will be a fresh start. 2: Is there a way to make DS use another drive instead of C? In the past it always seemed to default install to that drive. I really don't want it on the same volume as Windows, because more than once I have had Windows fail. Of couse when that happens it takes out everything else on the same volume with it. I have lost my projects more than once from that happening. So I would like to move DS to D or whatever, in case I have to do the horrors of reinstalling Windows :o)  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • 1. Unless you have backed up installers you don't get a choice of version. In any event, 4.10 has added significant new stuff in the form of dForce, and some scripts and plug-ins will require the then-latest version.

    2. You can place your content where you like. If you tell Windows to use another drive for your user files before isntall DIM and DS then it will use that location for the Connect files and the My Library folder (find the Documents etc. folders in C:/Users/YOU, right-click>Properties, Location tab, click Move). To change the location used by DIM (My Daz 3D Library in Public Documents) you need to click the gear icon at top right, go to the Installation tab, add a new directory by clicking +, enbter its details, click ... to select teh folder, then at the bottom of the Installation tab select the new location as the current destination; you then need to add that folder to DS, either by Edit>Preferences>Content tab>Content Directory Manager or by downloading this script and dragging it into the DS Viewport http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/scripting/api_reference/samples/file_io/install_manager_config_import/start

  • Thanks for the help, Richard. As I said this will be a whole new install, so would I be better off doing the online install or download and do a manual one? Also do I start out with the original 4.06 (I think) then upgrade to the 4.10 you mentioned?

    DAZ's DIM program does us a huge favor by making installation incredibly easy. You just need to know exactly how to set things up. Richard gave you some great info. I'm torn when considering DIM because of the way your content is scattered everywhere. In the past I've installed my content manually. It is an exhausting experience. I have better things to do with my limited time and energy. Translation: use DIM! laugh

    Be sure to check Work Offline the first time you run DIM so you can set it the way you want it.

  • Thanks everyone. Like I said.. I dont want it in the same volume as my OS.. Thanks goodness Daz has a patient download server that will let me start over again, no matter how many times stuff gets messed up :o)
