queries about dforce ...

So ... I'm hoping to get started with dforce as I seem to have acquired a decent handful of dforce items via various bundles and whatnot. The problem is that Studio is reporting that there is no valid OpenCL device found. Fair enough ... or so I thought. After perusing various threads here and elsewhere about the issue, I seem to be at a bit of a loss as to why it's actually saying that. My current workhorse machine is using an AMD Phenom II x6 CPU with a GeForce 750ti video card. The driver version for the video card is 391.35. From what I've been able to find, both the card specs and driver information both state that OpenCL is supported ... and inspection of the driver information via device manager clearly shows that OpenCL is place.  So my thought was that it's not the correct version (most likely, I assume, it's v1.1).

My quandry is that I'm wondering if there is a way to update that version to 1.2(+). I installed the latest and "greatest" driver from nvidia (I believe it was 398.xx), which was a catastrophy and resulted in my machine not recognizing the card at all and had to roll back. I understand that I can fall back to using the CPU for OpenCL calculations, but I'm actually unsure if my CPU is capable of it. I have the latest Catalyst software downloaded (which states OpenCL 2.0 inclusion) but am finding conflicting reports about whether my particular platform is supported at all (Windows 7 Ultimate). One site states that K10 architecture is supported while another states that AMD dropped support for the Phenom II entirely. indecision

I suppose the crux of the matter is that I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with similar situations or can perhaps shed some much needed enlightenment on the issue at hand.

Thanks in advance!

  • I have a 750Ti using driver 388.13 and that provides sufficient OpenCL support. You might try uninstalling the driver and then reinstalling.

  • Thank you for the suggestion, Richard. Unfortunately, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver didn't seem to fix the issue. Studio is still reporting no valid OpenCL device. I even went one step further and rolled back the driver to the same 388.13 version you mentioned and still no luck. I'm kind of at a loss at this point ... not sure if it's just my bad luck, or if I'm missing something entirely. I'm wary of installing the Catalyst software at this point as, like I said initially, I can't seem to find any definitive information about support for my platform.

  • Are you sure you have the GPU selected as the dForce/OpenCL device in the options?

  • Perhaps it's been a long day or I'm simply having a bit of a brain freeze .. but is there somewhere else I should be looking to set such an option? The only place I know of is the advanced tab of the simulation pane itself. There is a drop down menu for "Engine:" which currently just has "dforce" as the only available choice.

  • Look just below where it says Engine on that tab. If your CPU is selected, set it to your GPU instead.

  • Ah, therein lies the problem. The area just below the "Engine" is blank except the message that says a valid OpenCL device could not be found. I've attached an image to illustrate, just in case i'm looking in the wrong spot?

Have you made sure you've installed the driver from the card company's page?  Microsoft has an annoying tentancy of swapping it out with their own driver for those cards when you're not looking, which omits at least some of the support for the GPU stuff.  Try downloading the appropriate driver from the manufactur and installing from that.

  • Yeah, i've checked and double checked that the driver installed is from nvidia. Even to the point of havng installed at least three different driver versions, in hope that one of them would work. Unfortunately, nothing I do seems to be working. I've verified that OpenCL is installed in the card's driver information, but I can't tell what version it actually is. As I've said, I would fall back to using my CPU, but I'm unsure if my platform is supported by OpenCL 2.0. I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't something amiss with my DAZ installation itself, as everything else seems to be correct.

  • It's OpenCL 1.2, not 2.0, that is required.

  • Right ... I mention OpenCL 2.0 support simply because I can find nothing about 1.2 drivers for my CPU. Everything I find refers to 2.0 .. which also states that it's strictly for windows 8.1. I have found information about Opencl 1.2 for AMD graphics cards, but not CPUs. And honestly, I don't really feel it shold be necessary for me to change perfectly good hardware just to use a software feature, but I'm beginning to think that I might have to look at that as an option. =/

More and more, I'm thinking that I really have no idea what I'm doing or what I need to do to make dforce work.
