Use of DAZ Studio/Genesis for Commercial Game

edited December 1969 in Daz Studio Discussion

The Genesis figure sure does simplify the creation of characters for games. Especially RPG games where the player gets to morph their own design. However, I get the feeling using the figure directly for a commercial game would not be legal. Perhaps this is incorrect?

Is this sort of thing frowned upon from an artistic perspective? The morphs would be entirely my own, sculpted in ZBrush and brought in through Morph Loader Pro. Maybe a few of the default morphs included with DAZ Studio might be used, but sparingly. The UVs and textures would be completely done by myself as well.

I certainly could model my own figure, but rigging and animation are not my area of expertise, and the Genesis figure is rigged so perfectly. Not to mention DS has a really nice auto fit mechanism for clothes and such (which would be entirely made by me from scratch) that saves a lot of work.

Any insight is appreciated, thank you.

If the mesh itself is used in the game, you would need the Game Developer License. If you are only using renders (stills or animations) then you don't need the additional license.

Thanks for the quick reply. The Game Developer License is too far out of my price range at the moment, so I suppose I will make my own mesh and morphing system in Softimage.

Still though, I would miss a lot from DS. Can a completely custom mesh be used in DS as a full replacement for Genesis--that is, morphing and auto fit would work? Could this be used without the license?

    Thanks again.

The Licence covers certain content sold here at DAZ3D but not all content sold at DAZ3D is allowed for use in games. The licence does not apply to the use of DAZ Studio as a part of your work flow.

Apologies for resurrecting this topic, but what is the word on a modified Genesis 2 mesh? That is, the topology would be slightly reworked, new UVs, new dental set, unique morphs, and unique animations?

It was answered above that if the mesh itself was used a license would be needed, which makes sense. However, if significant edits were made would the license still be necessary?

Reason being, the topology of the Genesis mesh is damn near perfect, and I am finding it difficult to beat. Still, the topology needs to be reworked to be game ready, and even with the license I would make my own morphs and such... which hardly seems worth it.

    Thank you.

It would still count as a derivative of the original mesh.

Fair enough, thank you for the reply. I shall continue with my own mesh then.

Try Makehuman models. Their figures are open source.
