3Delight versus Iray lights

1. What makes a point or a spotlight a 3Delight verses an Iray version?

2. When you create a new point light etc. how do you know which version you are making?

3. Is there any way to convert 3Delight rigs, e.g. the “Rim Light Rig” and lights to Iray (so I don’t have to recreate the rig from scratch)?

  • 1. and 2. the current render engine - when you switch, the properties that are exclusive to the other engine are hidden and those exclusive to the current engine shown (assuming, of course, that you don't have Show Hidden Properties on). The lights are the same, at least for the basic ones (shader lights will be engine specific, though they may still have the default properties in the other engine).

    3. possibly, it would depend which properties of the 3delight lights were used and whether they were standard DS lights or lights using custom shaders.

Thanks for replying. I understand a little of what you said, but not enough to do anything. I guess I will have to try and find some sort of tutorial somewhere that explains it in detail.

    Thanks again,

  • The render engien set in Render Settings tells DS how to handle lights - there are not, from those in the Create menu, different light types for Iray and 3Delight.

I'm not sure what you really want to know.. but I will answer with my best guess:

Example: Daz spotlight = generic default spotlight. You get it when you add a spotlight from the tool bar or menu...

it is a 3DL light if  the render settings page render engine is 3DL or Scripted 3DL ; changing the render engine to IRay here sets the generic spotlight to the correct default settings for IRay - but in both cases only before you add the spotlight to your scene.

If you change from 3DL to IRay or vice versa after placing your lights. you have to go to the lights tab editor or the surfaces tab editor to change those lights to the other engine manually.  Not quite as messy as it sounds btrw

For me the settings shown update immediately if I change the render engine.

Hmm? I wonder what setting I messed up when I first got DS, since I have always had to manually change the settings.  not a problem for me but definitely a suprise that it could have been easier! Thanks Richard.

Thrain9 - Thanks for the info. That answers one question.

A further question: I now understand about setting your render engine BEFORE you create a spotlight. But what if you didn't realize you were in 3Delight when you made a light. Is there any way to convert it to an Iray version - or do you have to start all over again?

If you load a spotlight with the 3dl engine selected and then change to Iray, in the parameters tab (with the light selected) change the Photometric Mode to on, you then get more dials to alter such as Luminance.

Train9 and Scorpio - with your help I was able to figure out how to change a 3Delight lighting rig to an Iray one! Thank you very much!
