Gtx1080 vs gtx1080TI

Is there a noticeable speed increase in rendering with a 1080TI vs a regular 1080? Also can you use the 2 together or do you need them both then to be 1080TI. I think the 1080 has 2560Cuda,s and the TI well in the 3500+

I haven't owned a 1080, but I would estimate that it's on a par with a 980Ti.  From some benchmarks that I did before and after upgrading:

    Using the original benchmark scene:

No iray preview.  OptiX Acceleration disabled. Fresh load of the scene before hitting Render.

    980ti                            5 minutes 44 seconds

    1080ti                          3 minutes 26 seconds

I would imagine similar results when comparing the 1080 with the 1080Ti.

Lots of other results in the benchmarking thread: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/53771/iray-starter-scene-post-your-benchmarks/p1

It is worth remembering though that the 1080TI has 11GB of memory, compared to 8GB on the 1080, which can help if you do a lot of large scenes.

Overall though, the time saved depends on the type of scenes that you do.  If you do a lot of shorter renders then the time difference won't be very noticable.  If your current renders take hours, then you will notice more difference.  Since the 20xx series cards are due for release soon, you might be able to get a bargain on one of the 10xx cards if you wait.

As regards using more than one card, as long as they are both nVidia then they will both work together even if they are different models.  I use a 980TI and a 1080TI together.  The only problem is that the 980TI has a lot less memory, so it can drop out if that is exceeded, leaving the rendering to the 1080TI.  The only time that you have to have matched cards is if you are using and SLI link for gaming.

Also, copied from another thread where someone was kind enough to post a summary from the benchmarking thread:

I see the 3 cards in the bottom, is that still SLI? Didnt know that was possible.

I would imagine that none of them are SLI.  nVidia recommend that you disable SLI if you have it before using Iray.  As long as you have the slots and the power, you just install each graphics card, add the drivers and Windows (and Iray) detect them.

I would love to add a third card, but although I have free slots, I have no space.
