Help with the translate tool

in Technical Help (nuts n bolts)

When I select an object and the have Universal tool selected. In the viewport there is a cube with the 3 arrors (red, green, blue) that you can select to move the item. When I select the translate tool the arrrow the cube is not there.  How can i get the cube to show?

    If the node selected doesn't have an option to move in one or more directions then you won't get an arrow for that direction, and won't be able to have the cube (which is a free translate handle). The same applies to the rotation and scale handles.

    I don't get the free translate handle (thanks for letting me know what it is)  even if I create a sphere.  It use to show up, I don't know why or how I made it disappear.

    Tool Settings?

    I am told
    If you look at the Tool Settings pane there should be a check-box for the transform(s), and under that there should be buttons labelled X, Y, Z, and Free - make sure that the box is checked and that the Free button is down (On).
