Kewl animation vs not-kewl animation? haz thoughts?

is the matrix freeze frame camera surround still kewl or is it like 'not that old special effect'?

is slow motion kewl these days?

incorporating live actors with cgi isn't the same as an all cgi movie.

do you deliberately distort reality for special effect, or, would it just make the audience nauseous?

haz thoughts?

I'm not as convinced it's the slow-motion which was impressive in things like the Matrix as much as what was happening during the scenes it was used. If, like the Matrix, it's used to give the impression that the people involved are moving at incredible speeds, or perform unbelievable feats then that's cool. If it's watching some guy do a slow motion high kick into an overlord's snout, that's also cool. If it's watching someone eat their breakfast in slow motion... well, that's kinda dull :D

I think it's a case of using things in the right proportions. Distortions for attacks, for example can give the impression that it's more powerful, but if you use it too much then it just feels out of place and awkward. Strong cinematography is hard to master. There's a reason good directors are paid the big bucks :)

big bucks, lol. i started paying attention to the Director's names after watching Marvel Avengers and Thor. Drastic difference between Joss Whedon and Kenneth Branagh.

I actually have a video of Vicky 5 doing the gangnam style dance which I made to do a thorough testing of dynamic cloth in Daz Studio.

...went overboard on quality though, so it took forever to render :D

thoughts about the opening scenes for scifi fantasy movies?

Star Wars had the scrolling exposition text.
Dune opened with narration. LOTR also. Eragon.
Starship Troopers jumped ahead to battle scene, then went flashback to explain it.
Lexx started with a 2,000 year flashback.
Star Trek - stardate and Capt's Log entry
Harry Potter started with Dumbledor using magic to put out the streetlamps, Hagrid on a flying motorbike
don't know, yet, how Dr.Who or Game Thrones explained
    Fifth Element - flashback

That's a tough one. In Hellboy: the Golden Army I actually liked Prince Nuada as the hero more than Hellboy but i don't know if it was because of how it opened or not. The shadow-fight scene was fantastic.
