Making poses from a Photograph? Possible?

If you have a photograph that has a specific pose that you want a character to duplicate.. Is it possible to use a photgraph in the background and move assets or bones in the forefront of the image? I know this sounds odd, but making a 3D model using the exact pose from the photo. Is it possible using the image in the rear of the model as a resource like you can in certain programs to design a 3D character but instead in a pose?

  • You mean automatically or using the photo as a guide for manual posing? The latter ues, Window>Panes(Tabs)>Environment and you set the Type to Backdrop, then use the menu button on the colour bar to select your image. Of course a single photo may not give enough information to be unambiguous. There isn't a way to simply load a photo and say "pose like this", however.

The backdrop might be problematic as you don't have control over the size / proportions. Here is another way to get a photo into DS for reference...

    1. Create a plane primative (Z Positive, 1 meter square, give it some subdivisions, I use 64)
    2. Scale the plane to your image (e.g. my sample image was 624 pixels wide and 1028 pixels high; so I scaled it to 624% on X and 1028 % on Y)
    3. Now go to the Materials tab, choose Diffuse, and browse to find your sample image
    4. It will now be scaled properly for your sample image.
    5. Use the overall Scale setting on the parameters to shrink it down to the size you really need for your figure.

One additional tip, use the Front, Right, Left, etc. views instead of Perspective. There is a difference between "Front" and "Perspective" with the camera right in front of the subject. That's why you see in the screenshot I have both Front and Perspective views shown. It lets me work in Persepctive, but see the results in the Front view.
