Question about buying a figure.

I'm a long term Poser user, looking into Daz3d.

There is something I don't understand, for example if I want to buy

FWSA Viola HD for Latonya 8 - The description page states Compatible Figures: Genesis 8 Female and Required Product: Latonya 8

Now Latonya 8 is based on the Genesis 8 female as well, so why do I need to buy her too? Especially when the Viola figure has the morphs and textures.

I've seen this with alot of different characters, is this Daz's way of getting me to spend an extra $50.00?

Genesis 8 is the free base figure.   Latonya 8 is one of the main character bases which have been released for Genesis 8  in fact it is the latest female main character release.

FWSA Viola HD for Latonya 8 - is a character which uses the features of LaTonya and builds on them.  It will work to a certain extent on the base Genesis 8 female, but qill not look the same as shown in the store promos if it does not include the LaTonya genes.  LaTonya is still on intro sale, you can buy a bundle or just the base figure.

Viola character must be a combination of some percentage of Latonya shape and custom morphs. "Viola" product will give you the custom morphs, but you also need to have Latonya morph to get the full result.

So the Latonya 8 figure is recommended but not actually necessary? The Viola character morphs etc. will still work just not as advertised without her?

Yes, the Viola morphs will work without Latonya 8, but the result will probably look different than the Viola promo images. She might still look OK, just different. Or she might look very distorted. You could buy just Viola and try her. If she is not satisfactory without Latonya, you could then buy Latonya or request to return Viola. The Viola materials (skin and makeup) will work fine without Latonya. You can apply them to any Genesis 8 Female morph shape.

    Thanks everyone, all clear now.

I do think though that it's a shitty way to do things, you shouldn't have to buy two figures to obtain the desired result. I can see why now they give the software and basic Gen figures away for free.

With generation 4 you needed to have V4 to make Stephanie 4 Aiko 4 and the Girl 4 work, Then there were characters for each of those sold. This is no different, except that there are more main figures for the genesis generations.

I see what your saying. I just need to be careful when buying  Avoid the middle man woman so to speak. The fact that there are so many other main characters does make it worse, compared to the V4 days. I still remember when the original Genesis figure was released, the one figure does all, Man, Woman, Boy, Girl, Freak, Monster etc. Now it's beginning to get out of hand in my opinion. 3D rendering as a hobbie is already expensive enough.

There are many characters that use the base figure. Its rather the exception most of the time. The fastgrab has also very good deals, especially recently so you dont have to spend much.

You might want to take a look at some of the add-on morph sets (e.g. creature, muscle, face/body, etc.) for your favorite base figures (e.g. G8F/M) and then look at either of the Sim Tenero randomizer products in the DAZ store. I'd recommend the newest plugin version. Both are loads of fun and you can generate some amazing characters in no time, and you don't have to play the silly 'DAZ dependency' game ever again.

BTW, the tools work on *any* product that has morphs (dogs, dragons, cats, horses, humanoids: mil1 figures, through the M4/V4 series, through G8-M/F, etc.). You'll still need skins/hair/clothes, etc., but you can buy them, find freebies, or retask them from other characters you already have.

    Just a thought.
