How do I run Windows software on Ubuntu? Like Studio?

Well, there's a few options. Some use "Wine", which is software that lets you run Windows stuff on Linux. Or you can do a virtual machine. Or you can dual boot Windows and Linux.

Personally I prefer the virtual machine route, though I don't use it for Studio. Not sure how it works with graphics-intensive stuff like Iray previews and stuff.

  • Sadly, you can't do it 'natively', because Daz only supports Studio on Windows and Mac.  You would need either to run a virtual machine (VM) on top of Ubuntu and install Windows on that, which in theory would then allow you to install Studio on Windows.  Or you could investigate the WINE project (WINE Is Not an Emulator), which seeks to translate Windows system calls into Linux system calls and thus allow Windows applications to run on Linux.  There's a thread somewhere in the forums where folks have discussed using WINE to run Studio, with varying degrees of success, but none complete I think.  Neither option would be straightforward.

This really begs the question why you would want to do this (other than for the challenge)?  You would usually look for a near equivalent native application to replace your Windows software - e.g. LibreOffice to replace MS Office - but there's not really anything like Studio for Linux that I know of.

  • There's already a long thread on using DS under Linux https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/60901/daz-studio-and-linux/p1
