an interesting CGI video channel
I'm a big fan of Bob Newhart too. He's got such a dry delivery. My personal fave is the USS Codfish.
Wish I could afford to retire, but the government keeps increasing the pension age at the same rate as I approach it...!
Sorry for the rant, folks.
Another Newhart fan, here. Saw a piece on Dean Martin. Didn't realize that Bob Newhart had been a writer for Dean Martin's variety TV show back in the day. They said that Deano had a clause in his contract that said he did not have to go to meetings or rehearsals during the week. Apparently, lots of people were trying to convince Dean to do a TV show, which he did not want to do, so he made a list of absurd contract demands. Well, one of the networks agreed to the demands, and hired Bob Newhart to be one of the writers. So they made Dean's surprised looks part of the show when they filmed it. One fun sketch had Bob Newhart and Dean at a retail couter and Dean keeps laughing at the jokes, and Bob Newhart breaks character to complain about a straight man who can't avoid laughing.
Bob Newhart, great comedian, great writer, and in my opinion the greatest straight man ever. Always gave his costars the funny lines.
Bob with Dean in a classic sketch.
I've heard that one as a monologue, didn't know it was a two person sketch as well.
I've read Bob Newhart made his first live performance here in Houston at the Tidelands Motel (now gone). The crowd reportedly loved it and applauded until he came back out for an "encore". With no more material, he asked, "Which one do you want to hear again?" Pretty good encore, since here I am repeating it decades later.
