render cancellation hangs/fails + temp files questions (solved)

i have a scene that i just can't get a render of.

the basic setup is stonemason's old library, one of the philospher's self-illuminating godrays, and a character...run in the current studio beta.  the scene isn't overwhelming my nvidia card--there's no switch to CPU rendering when i set it up and change the viewport mode to iray.  and although it takes a while, the iray viewport preview does generate.

when i go to render, i switch the viewport mode back to texture shaded, and minimize daz studio as soon as that's an option.

usually i can cancel a render before it's completed and still wind up with an image file.  but cancel just doesn't work with this scene.  it doesn't matter whether i try to cancel after five minutes or elevn hours, or whether i'm rendering to a file or a window.  studio hangs and grinds (i've let it grind for up to two hours).  task manager shows that the percentage of memory being used by studio fluctuates a tenth of a percent, but the MB of memory used remains constant.  and the only way to exit studio is to force-quit it.

checking the render window (when i try that approach) at any time during this process gives me a totally blank pre-render grey-and-white-checkerboard window.

i've checked the temp files directory before attempting to cancel, during the cancel grind, and after the force quit.  no temp files are visible at any of those times.

i've tried node selecting only the elements of the old library that appear in the camera view, exporting them as a scene subset, and creating a new barebones version of the scene.  doesn't help a bit.

any suggestions?  i'm no expert, but it seems really weird to me that no temp files are being generated.

this seems to be my month for epic render fails.  :)

thanks!

  • It sounds as if it isn't completing the upload to the render engine - what is the last line of the log after you force quit?

    thanks for helping, richard.  :)

the last line of the log both before and after cancel/force quit is:

    2018-09-28 12:16:55.578 Iray INFO - module:category(IMAGE:IO):   1.0   IMAGE  io   info : Loading image "D:\oh3d\DAZ 3\Library 3\Runtime\Textures\Orestes\OrestesHDRISkies\Twilight\twilight05.hdr", pixel type "Rgb_fp", 8192x4096x1 pixels, 1 miplevel.

  • OK, so it is still in the prep stage. Do you know which set the HDR is from? Does suing a different HDR help? (It's possible that it's sticking not on the HDR image but n whatever comes next, and not being able to update the log, but the HDR is the first thing to check.)

thank you, richard.  i'll try that.

the hdr is from orestes' witches' twilight hdri skydomes.

    okay...

nope, changing the hdr didn't solve the problem.  the image renders in the viewport in iray mode just fine, but the render stalls at 0% and studio locks up when the render is cancelled.

the log still ends after loading the hdr.  looks like the app is failing to load the next item in the queue, as you suggested.

i do see, looking at the log right at the point when studio is entering the let's-render-now phase:

    2018-09-28 17:05:28.489 WARNING: QMetaObject::invokeMethod: No such method DzImageRenderHandler::getViewRenderHandler()

a string other warnings that appear just before that point include:

2018-09-28 17:05:19.676 WARNING: ..\..\..\..\..\src\sdksource\fileoutput\dzassetoutfile.cpp(10713): No geometries match the vertex count of morph "..."

i have no idea whether or not these kinds of errors would be enough to crash a render.  but they are the only warning signs i see.

looking at what's loaded in the render stage and what hasn't before the log gives up, i do see that the figure with the string of no-geometry morph issues hasn't loaded yet.  the base character morph is trying to modify the geometry of eyebrows i've deleted.  and the foot morphs may be failing because my character's wearing a nifty foot morph i discovered in the forums here.

  • Will it render if you remove the figure? (That doesn't have to mean delete it, just set its visibilty off.)

i finally got the scene working last night.  it turned out to be a displacement maps issue.

one of these days i'm going to wise up and stop including multiple hey-i-wonder-if-will-this-work? experiments in one render.  :)

thanks for your help, richard.  as always, it's appreciated.
