How do I make a custom sized plane? (resolved)

I don't want it a plane square shape.
Can I bow the plane around a cylindrical object?

A plane is by definition a flat square (or rectangular) shape.
You can create other primitives though - cube, sphere, cone, cylinder and torus. So you could just create a cylinder if that's what you're looking for.
What exactly are you trying to do?

Well, I have an airplane that came w/ no textures. I painted it red with DZfire shaders, but I want a logo and lettering on the plane. Normally, I'd just edit the texture in photoshop, but there is nothing to edit ... lol.
So I'm trying to mold something around it to appear painted on.
Make sense?
Or is there a way to make a texture map for the plane?
Hi Aidana...
Will this work for you?
It's a simple single sided 10X10 grid plane with five bending morphs (slight differing arcs; Can mix-n-match for fit). I created it on the vertical axis (Z forward), so you should be able to apply to your airplane easily.
It's UV mapped. Just create your texture for your logo, and a corresponding transparency map (place in "Opacity" parameter) to eliminate unwanted mesh around your logo/lettering.
That would be perfect! Do you have this up on SCG or rendo?
Can't you make a PNG logo wiith an Alpha channel and use LIE?
That would be my recommendation as well. Much easier than trying to wrap another object around the plane and get it to match up.
Polygon Group Editor from Tools. Create New Surface from Selected and load any thing you like into it. Even Use LIE to add more layers if you wish.
I've only ever used LIE with the default wounds and such. With there being not texture or texture map, just a color, how would I control where it goes?
Never used that tool. Is there a tut floating around somewhere so I can learn what it does?

Select the plane model, go in to the Surfaces pane and left click on where the diffuse texture map would go and you should see Layered Image Editor, click on it and it opens the LIE working window. First click on the big + sign to add a layer then further down is a place called Resource which should say None beside it. Click on the word None and Browse to where you logo it on your hard drive. Leave it on Alpha Channel Blend and position the new layer.
But combining this with the PGE tool as Jad said above will be a better way of making sure the logo goes where you want it.

Oh is this plane a freebie if so can you give me the link so I can play and give you a blow by blow account how to do it. Or better still have a play and see how you get on. If you get stuck just shout.

Thanks for the link :D I'll check it out.
Oh I have edited my post above to give more precise instructions. It has been a while since I used LIE.
It is a freebie : http://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/details.php?item_id=66973
I re-downloaded it to see if I missed something. There does appear to be a texture map, after all, but I can't access or load it in daz, for some reason. Even so, I'd still need to figure out where to include my text and logos on that map, since everything is sorta scattered. I don't know where it would end up or how big.

I was wrong. That's not the model I used. It is the same style plane, but the thumbnails are completely different. I'll need to find the plane I used, or switch planes, but that still doesn't help me figure out this texture map ... lol.
Well it has a Runtime and a texture map as you found. All it did is merge that runtime with my runtime the contains all my Vehicles, Plane and Boats content folder and it loads in to DS4.6 without any problems. It has been uvmapped and it dose have separate mat zones to using LIE will be easy.

No rush. I gotta get ready for karate class, anyway. I'll be back on the project when I get home. I looked up the name, Cessna-172, which is how I found the wrong one. They have the same name ... lol. This is how the thumbnail looks for the one I am using:
and where is this one from?
Be the first with a 170 with retractable landing gear.
O.K., Aidana...
Just sent it to you. Check your email (illustration_yahoo).
To clarify, I was under the impression you needed something like this to make an external decal, because the model you are using does not have any UV's. Therefore, you are unable to work via textures (or texture additives, such as LIE).
Regardless if a model came with any textures, or not, easy way to verify if UV's were created is using Studio's native UV Checker (believe it is available in DS3). It is located with the viewing parameters drop-down (perspective, front, right, etc.), and you can check the UV's via individual Material nodes, or entirely with the mesh node.
If the model is UV-ed, I would go with one of the other suggestions here in this thread, or at least create a base texture for it. My decal plane is only an alternative if you can not create a texture due to lack of UV's.
Example:
I have no idea. I've looked up the file name on rendo, SCG & bing, but can't find it. It may not be available for all I know ... lol ... Whic would be my type of luck ... lol.
That looks cool. Is it available? If so, where?
This is exactly what I am looking for :D I am forced to use DS4.6 because my dynamics stopped working in DS3 ... lol. And since I am really confused by the other suggestions, and rarely have time to learn the techie stuff, this will work perfectly :D
Thanks :D
Good, I hope it serves your purpose.
If the DS 4.5 version does not work for any reason (did not have time to test outside of build), then just use the .pp2 prop in the DS3 included folder. Import via drop-down; File/Import (.pp2). It should work without fail being an OBJ called PP2 prop.
Resize the prop to desired size, adjust bending, add textures, and render...
Sending cyber kisses :D ...
Yes, I got it from here:
http://3dmodel.domawe.com/entry/cessna-170-Free-3D-Model-Airplane
(click on 'moreview', the download button is very lightgray and in 7zip. I always use winrar)
There is an issues with one of the texture maps though. I think the modeller messed up there.
That's why I turned opacity of that specific material zone to zero, and that gave the result as shown in my render.
Import the .obj at scale 10000, that's a good starting point. You can see Genesis behind the flight controls.
Thanks :D
