was there ever a thread dedicated to spline modeling?

was there ever a thread dedicated to spline modeling?
wanting to add splines link to my sigline.
and animation, someone asking me in pm.

modeling options in Carrara are

  • splines
  • vertex
  • boolean
  • metaballs

which ones i forget?  (doh)

and Carrara lathes and sweeps and other fun functions
pro version gives a couple more fun functions

I have seen many examples of people showing how to do something in the spline modeler as an alternative to a vertex model, but rarely in a thread dedicated to spline models.  There is one spline-specific thread linked in WGJohn's modeling links list.

Other modelers - depends what counts a modeler.  I would also list

    - formula modeler

    - terrain modeler

    - plant modeler

    - hair modeler

    and the text primitive

To me, the spline modeler is kind of a mystery.  I've watched Phol's tutorial, and I've created a couple of things.  But mostly I was just stumbling around.  Very counterintuitive for me.  Vertex is easier to grasp.

Even stranger, wasn't most of the Carrara content (hundreds of items) in the objects tab created with the spline modeler?  At some point, there were people who really were expert at using it.

EvilProducer is pretty amazing with the spline modeler.  There are many simple objects that I think are more convenient with the spline modeler, as long as a procedural shader or a label is sufficient for texturing.  The classic example would be a beer bottle with a label on one side.  Extremely easy with the spline modeler, and no uvmapping.

I can make ropes and twisty things with it and join a few beveled objects

    thats about it

Same here.  I'm no where near as comfortable with it as EP.  However, I definitey use it for things that I want a beveled edge like table tops.  I use it for lamp stands.  All sorts of simple objects that fill a scene.

Here I started with the spline wine glass from the object browser.  It is in the basic objects folder.

It is very easy to change its shape and apply a label without ever having to UVMap.  I lengthened it in the model room and drew a rectangle layer on it in the texture room.  To me, it is even easier than the vertex modeler for this particular object, even though a lathe would be very simple in the vertex modeler.

you can animate splines which looks weird

yes I used it to make a breaking wave once - didnt work kept turning itself inside out :)

my humble general impressions around the webs, splines seem to be in the big boi's and goil's league?

One of the past challenges I hosted had a Spline model as an optional requirement.

You can get some really cool results when combining shapes as compounds or numbering them. I don't recall if Raydream had a vertex modeler, but it had the spline modeler, and that is what I learned in. The spline modeler is very close to what it was like in the Raydream days.

The last couple years I have been forcing myself to use the VM, because I always felt it was unintuitive. There are many objects I create in the VM, that I could create in the spline modeler many times faster. But again, I want to get proficient in the VM.

If I rememeber correctly, Ray Dream introduced the vertex modeler in either 5 or 5.5.

I think you remember correctly.  Although not absolute confirmation, the Carrara 5 handbook has tutorials for the vertex modeler, but the Carrara 3 handbook does not.  Doesn't say anything about Carrara 4.

OMG no vertex modeling just splines, I would have never left Sketchup ....

I don't think Sketchup existed back then! wink
