Viewport to dark to place objects correct

The viewport in texture shaded view is often so dark its hard to see how to place your objects correctly.
Especially water. When i use Iray view its impossible to move object around cause the program goes beserk.
I tried all the diffrent other options but none worked. Is there anyway to light up the viewport to see the
envirorment as it is?

  • Those are the default shortcuts for the Preview Lights togle - by default DS tries to preview the effect of lights, usually up to the first seven due to OpenGL limits, but if you toggle it off with that key press or the command in the Window manu then instead you will see the sceen lit from a "headlamp" attached to the viewpoint - at least in the modes other than IPR for 3Delight or nVidia Iray Preview mode.

Any time I use the Ctrl+L key combination it either brightens, brings on lights, or darkens, puts off the lights if they are already on. There are some environments that this has very little effect but I have no idea why. Sometimes just changing the camera/perspective view makes a difference to how much the light actually brightens but it isn't consistent but it is never completely black or so dark I can't see what I am doing.
