You can create animations in DS without any external programs if you want. Basically, just use the timeline to shift the various character/prop/camera poses over time.
When you go to render, you can render directly to a movie file, and be able to play the animation from there. A slightly more robust workflow is to render to an image series, instead of directly to a movie. That way, if something crashes partway thru, or you need to tweak part off the animation, you don’t need to re-render the whole thing. If you do that, you need an external program to merge the image series into a movie file. There are a number of different free programs that will do that. Search for “image series to video” or “image series to gif” or whatever you intend your final output to be. I use ffmpeg, but that might be a bit hard-core for a novice.
