Thanks. That is exactly what I need to review. Holly is great.

Yes, I made the figure invisible to make as clear as possible that I really suck at making fur. But, Holly's tutorial is great. Once I get a chance to go through the tut in more detail, I'll post a (hopefully) vastly improved little doggie. With a few morphs, I might even be able to transform the dog into toto, and include it with the tin man in my contest entry.

    Its Ok

I want a dog like that, visible fur and invisible skin, so cool :P.

    Its a nice start.

You can do that to get certain features like undercuts on cliff faces and such, but most of the time there is no need.

This is exactly what I have been (slowly) experimenting with. I've been using LightWave, Sculptris and Carrara together to try differing approaches. I am experimenting with the free edition of World Machine right now too.

Carrara is still the easiest package for building and shading really nice terrains.

For everyone else, sorry to drift off topic, but I've got to say the 3d pinup course from Dreamlight was worth not much more than the 15 dollars I paid for it, and I would never recommend getting it at full price (if anyone is considering that), as there just isn't much there.

That is about $13.46 more than it is worth. That was the very last thing I ever bought from DreamLight. The only package truly worth considering is Model Master 2 - admittedly, the modeling there is LightWave but it can be ported to other modelers.

Great work in this thread everyone! I sure do miss modeling...I need to get back into it soon.

If I ever get the time,

I want to try my hand at a set of original low-poly comic figures (stylized, but not what I generally see in the toon category). Eventually, I want 11 rigged figures for the cast of my projects. The 2 lead actors (a heroic proportioned man and a pinup woman), 5 character actors (a large fat man, a thuggish man, a shorter skinny man, a pleasantly plump "best friend" female and a hawkish featured female), 2 children, a dog and a cat. (obviously, the point of Genesis and Genesis 2 is to create the whole cast with morphs, but its my hobby and I'll play how I want to).

So, here is a start on the lead female. 7.5 heads tall. Pinup proportions.

    Very nice! :)
I am finding this modeler to be the key to all right now. It's so fun building a model with the idea of shader domains in my head. Layering the mesh to create layers of shaders... then with SubD taking so much of the work out of the way, and lowering the polygon count... just having so much fun. Your beautiful model is evidence enough of how I know that you know what I mean when I talk about how friendly Carrara can be as a modeler. It's a very comfy feel and navigation is spot on smooth. I'm starting to really get at home with what there is in the model room to work with - although I'm still only tipping the edge of the can!
    Anyways... Great model, diomede!

Thanks for the kind words, EP and Dart. I am getting relatively comfortable with box modeling. This mesh is only about half finished, but as you point out, Dart, I don't want to embed too much of the detail in the mesh, when a lot can be accomplished (and potentially changed) through the use of shaders and sub-D. The real work begins when I start shading, rigging, etc.

I am still feeling my way with the higher level shading, hair, light gels, and atmosphere concepts. I need to get some of the great plugins I see people working with, especially from DCG and Fenric.

And EP, you ran a great contest that has gotten me to think about the other modelers in Carrara. I didn't end up using it, but I got about 2/3s finished using the spline modeler to make the leg-lamp from A Christmas Story. I will definitely be using the spline modeler to make mechanical devices as the need arises. It is definitely underutilized. I'd recommend starting a spline modeling thread, but I think a few disgruntled contestants might flame it. (just kidding).

I'm a big fan of PhilW, and would love to give it a try, but honestly I just can't mentally justify the expense. :) I'm sure it's very worthwhile and I have no doubt I would learn tons, but it's just priced too high for me, since I dabble with this stuff strictly as a hobby.

I realize it can be tough to justify spending money. I'm definitely beside Dart on the value of PhilW's training. If DreamLight left a sour taste in your mouth (been there, done that), you will be totally blown away by what PhilW teaches.

DreamLight's Model Master 2 is his best training -- because DreamLight doesn't lead that one. MM2 is admittedly done entirely in LightWave but the techniques are (mostly) transferable to other apps.

Indeed--Philw stuff is very very helpful to learning all kinds of things even if you have been using it (Carrara) awhile. And while on the subject of the Carrara modeling one just wonders how good it actually could become with a little more love. I always thought this type of focused improvement might be forthcoming someday as it could be used to potentially create content to be sold. ---- (Are you reading Daz ?) .

But I do feel free to judge his tutorial work, since I opened the wallet (a little) to get it, and I find it wanting. Not 'take to the streets with pitchforks and torches, let's kill the monster!'-wanting, but disappointing-wanting. Honestly I kind of knew it when I bought in, but it was not too much to break my budget and I'm so completely unversed at modeling, so I don't feel cheated because I did learn some things, but the guy shouldn't advertise specifically that he can teach modeling in Carrara when it's pretty obvious pretty quickly that he doesn't really ever use Carrara and doesn't seem to know his way around the interface. Also he's just not a good instructor, and as he wandered and doodled and droned on and on about exceedingly basic or unrelated stuff, while breezing past more complicated stuff, I was left ready to either fall asleep or stab myself :)

That pretty much nails it. Spot on! I agree that there is some tiny (usually very tiny) value to the DL material. You'll learn a little bit and maybe a thing or two that you didn't know before. But those little gems of knowledge are surrounded by a bunch of crap and marketed by a spammer.

Also have you considered that Phil possibly *is* a pornstar? He's certainly a stud, judging from how awesome he is, both on the forums and in regards to his products, and with that sultry british accent he's got going there I can't help but imagine that women swoon in his presence ;)

You just completely changed my perceptions. "Rotate that polygon! Yeah baby! Work the glow channel!"

Seriously, Phil's training is so good that I wish I could buy it for every Carrara hobbyist out there. It helped me hit the ground running (well, jogging fast for me) with Carrara.

No, no, no! If you're going to carry the pornstar analogy to Carrara, (or 3D in general), you must do a better job with the double entendres and innuendos, such as:

•Ohh baby, you make feel like extruding along your sweep path!

•Let me adjust you morph package!

•If you show me your "vertex," I'll show you my "spline."

•Why don't you let me add edge thickness?

Let me wake up and I can come up with enough to get us all banned from Renderotica!

...and I have to now go into the model room... alone? Quit scaring the crap out of me!

I'd also like to mention that Jack Whitney's Carrara 5 Essential Training at Lynda dot com is a real winner in the learning the modelers department. He takes a close look at each of the modelers and all of the functions that they have. It's Carrara 5 Pro, but when you're new and wish to learn, this is another great one. The hard part being that all of these training things are a hundred bucks a piece. That is a lot to cough up. I like to collect these things, so I eventually plan to have them all. Meaning that I still need to get Mark Bremmer's stuff from VTC.

I have to try and remember! It's an old one. I think I used the DOF, because I hadn't yet learned the trick about the depth pass. I think I had a high blur value to emphasize the effect.
