Is it necessary to install the "Ps" content along with the "Ds" content that comes with a lot of Daz products, or should I just uncheck those "Ps" items in the DIM so they're not installed? (I'm only using Daz, not Poser so I assume it just wastes space)
That depends. If they are poserCFs then no, those are not needed for DS. If, on the other hand, they are marked as DS companion files or similar then yes. Another test is whether one is a lot smaller than the other - if the DS is small relative to the Poser (but a factor of ten or more) then you probably need both, if they are within a factor of two of each other then probably not.

THank you, that clears things up.
