Freak vascularity

edited September 2013 in New Users

Hi people!

I'm relatively new to Daz products. My question is: How do i apply Freak 5 Normal maps and Displacement (veins) on a Freak character after i apply the 'Freak 5 All' skin? Double clicking doesn't work. I can apply tattoos, body hair, other skins but no muscle striations and vascularity. I enabled dispacement on the Surfaces tab which had no effect. Even if the character has very light skin, i can make no changes to let the blueish veins appear. I tried M5 as well and double clicking made no change to the character's vascularity. I always check if i selected the character before applying something.

Can someone please help me? :) Thank you.

Blas

FIrst question:Is it not appearing in render, or just the preview?
Second Quesiont:What are your percentages for the displacement, and normal maps?
Third:Is there a picture appearing in the normal and displacement channels? like the skin texture icons?
FOurth what kind of lighting are you using?

If it's just the preview that's not showing, try rendering to see if it shows.
DIsplacement maps don't show anything in the preview, only at render.
(don't scoff, depending on how new someone is, they may not think about this, i sure didn't)

Some times you may have to max a setting like displacement, or normal to get results, you may even need to push beyond the limits.
So crank them up to 200%, and see what the render results are.

IF the maps are appearing in the particular channels, then it's probably lighting, or the percentages, or min and max settings.

If you are only using the preview lights, the results are, generally, gonna be crap.
This one you'll have to play around with, and may need to add specular, or displacement lights to bring out some details.
Start with a 3 light setup.
    Key, Fill, back.
Put the key(main) light to the right of the character.
    Fill on the left.
Both pointing at the character, but slightly offset.
    The backlight directly behind.
Keep your settings at default for now
Then add a specular light at the position of the key light
you just need to switch from on to specular only.
just leave it at default as well.
Run a test render, and see what the results are.
Save the image to reference so you can see what different settings do as you change.
YOu may have to go one setting at a time. and render at each change.
The spot render tool comes in handy for this.

    Then start tweaking lighting.
Bring the fill and key down to 50%, and see what happens
Don't mess with the backlight or specular.

Then of course you may need to tweak the skin settings.
For this if you start messing with skin, only select the skin areas(LIps to toes, you can deselect the nails).
Stay consistent on all the skin areas, If you change displacement, make sure all the areas are changed.

just a few ideas to get you started, i'll pop back in after i've played around to see what i can break.

    UPDATE:
Freak 5 default loads with Normal and displacements, Displacement at 40%, and min:-0.40, max:0.40.
SO that suggestion just went out the window.
Except changing the values of each.
    Back in a bit.

Thank you very much for the answer!
I'll try to fast render and see if it shows or i'm gonna need to play with the settings you suggested :)
I never thought that there are things that i can't see in the preview :D Thanks again.

Displacement and Bump maps are only shown in a Full render using 3DeLight. The Viewport will not show those, nor will OpenGL unless you have a VERY highend GPU card.

oh just wait till you load something that is completely invisible, or has see through spots(not poke through).
Doesn't show till you render, but renders beautifully.

Or you load a light set and the whole scene turns black.
That's more a video card problem than any thing.

    Back on topic.

I don't need to post before i've had coffee(tea actually) on a sunday morning.

The original issue also had to do with getting the veins to "pop" color wise.
That is getting into subsurface, as the texture maps for freak doesn't seem to have a blue tinge for the vein areas.

I played around with trying various settings on the Specular and specular 2 channels to try to get the veins to show up.
Tried dropping in the bump maps for the veins, and changing to some seriously ghastly colors.
Manipulating the channels and strengths, didn't bring them out one bit, even with a specular light.

YOu may be stuck with out them showing as blue. tried finding some non-postworked renders on various sites, and came up with bubkis. Heck the product previews don't seem to show them that way either.

It may just be something simple i'm missing, or it may be something that can't be done.
I'll try a few more ideas and toss them up as I can.
Been away from my work station, and my laptop doesn't handle rendering well.

and if you happen to find a way to do it, i'd love to know.

Thank you very much guys, it was as you said. Rendering with 3delight and making adjustments on the displacement values did the job, although the veins had skin color instead of bluish. But first i need to adjust the lights and colors because the rendered characters don't ever look the same like in the preview.

I'm afraid your stuck skin color veins. Displacement maps only move the mesh, they do not add sub surface color to the item. As far as I know we do not have a way to add two subsurface colors to any object which would be needed for proper veins and flesh tones.
