Converting obj files into DS native content

I found some obj files of random stuff such as a 3D model of a goldfish and a goblet of wine to name two.  How do I convert the static fish into a useable model for DS.  Also how do I convert the wine glass into a prop?  Do I need to convert the obj into something else?  Or would it be better to make it a poser prop and then add DS texture settings?

  • A wine glass should be easy, assuming you just want a static object in DS - that is no morphing or what have you.  Just import the OBJ file, scale as required and apply a shader of your choice - some sort of glass probably.  Save as a figure/prop asset.

A fish may well be more complicated, depending on the extent you want it to be poseable and have somewhat realistic texturing.  Again, you would start by importing the OBJ.  Then something along these lines.

    • Use the Geometry Editor to create face groups corresponding to the bones you will need, and surfaces for the textures you want to apply, if they don't already exist.
    • Export to OBJ and then use the Figure Setup pane to bring the geometry in and create the bones corresponding to the face groups.
    • Tweak the bones in the Joint Editor if necessary, and use the Node Weight Map Brush tool to create the weight maps.
    • Apply the textures to the surfaces.

On the other hand, if the fish will be a static prop only and has a single surface, you can just import the OBJ, scale it and apply a shader and/or image map to the surface.

The standard of the original modelling could be a restriction, especially for the fish, and might make rigging and weight mapping tricky if the modeller did not have rigging etc. in mind.
