Pilots wanted!

I see a lot of people on forums where lots of modelling goes on, making vehicles - cars , planes and spaceships being very popular, planes in particular. But very few of these people (myself included) can make their own decent humans - so you tend to see a LOT of planes with empty pilot seats.

So I suspect that a pilot outfit would go down very well indeed, (certainly with me!). I'd say the three main options to cover would be civilian, military, and something a bit more SF. I suspect that you could get away with currently available clothes to a degree at least if a good helmet with oxygen attachment was in there. (Thinking more military / SF here obviously).

Not so much for myself, but I think drivers would also go down well with the same people - something lik rally driver overalls might even be adaptable for both with the right textures...

Suggested a pilot's outfit for Genesis a little while ago, myself.

Best I've come up with are some of Midnight Stories' cybernetic-style costumes, providing you're fine with a radically futuristic setting. Nothing really modern, though - or even near-future.

This, however, comes with a very applicable gunship-type helmet, but am unsure if it's compatible with Genesis or can only be smart-attached to older generation figures:

That's a pretty neat helmet certainly - and it should not be too hard to position.

    Thanks

Just got it in the last few hours, thanks to the sale. So long as you parent it to Genesis' head, the helmet can be rescaled in all dimensions. Placed it on Michael 5 and, with some resizing, it looked perfect!

Still need something with a visor and, ideally, something with a breathing mask, too. If someone made a pack of several different variations of pilot helmets, it'd likely sell massively.

For something like a gunship pilot, though, it's great! Plus, there are several different textures, so that several pilots can be included in the one scene and not look like carbon copies. :)

What's a good visual reference for contemporary flight suits and appropriate helmets?

Hmm... Depends if you're going for historical authenticity of something more generic, which could be used for modern-day or near-future.

Outside of suggested book references, I could send some reference image links for actual outfits in use?

Or if you're thinking of the latter, I've got suitable excerpts from the 'Colonial Marines Technical Manual' in JPG which I could send over, which has some tremendously useful concept art (and photographic references) for military pilot costumes suitable for the near-future look shown in 'Aliens', which also look fine for the present day. I managed to make something similar-ish to the dropship pilot by combining the helmet from Escort Dogg with costume elements from the War Dog and Genesis Ultimate Military Basic sets, but it needs lots of adjustment and isn't as suitable for a pilot as I'd like... Still working on it. Plus, the Dogg helmet doesn't have anything for an oxygen supply (love the gunship-like adjustable eyepieces, though!).

Obviously, if you were going for the other extreme; something ultra-futuristic? I'd suggest maybe taking the 'Star Wars' TIE Fighter and X-Wing pilot costumes and putting your own spin on them. Or possibly something like Master Chief, from 'Halo', but that'd be more suitable for an armoured look. There's also the pilot costumes from the remake of 'Battlestar Galactica', which have a clear-face visor, which would be good for those who want to have the option of showing a character's full face.

I also have a number of particularly good helmet designs for Second Life, which would be great springboards for coming up with something unique. I could probably find still locate the vendor links for the better ones of those.

So, depends if you're going for present-day, distant future or both, I guess!

I was thinking more present day. There are already a lot of sci fi bodysuits.

Any Air force pilot in a modern army would be nice IMHO. Here are some of the modern pressure suits...

For flight suits, I've used one from Billy-T for M4 which seemed to fit the bill for near-future renders, as well as present day and is straight forward to retexture when needed. It also has the oxygen mask attachment with several colour options for the suit and helmet (navy, olive, and tan).
This is the one:: http://www.daz3d.com/clothing-accessories/m4-air-crew-set and there is a female version over at Rendo.

If anyone is considering doing a newer/different version for Genesis (not looking specifically at you SickleYield, but you've got talent and great products)... I'd be interested in picking it up as well.

Congrats! rigging is a complete pain, to bad you can't share that model once finished unless of course you are the modeler that developed it https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/military/character/fighter-pilot-pack

that is definately the quality and look that we need at DAZ though.
